johnsonlite
I know this must have been asked before but I could not find it in any discussions. Need a little help. Is the 1953 10w oil for the transmission for a 53 New Yorker equivalent to a 10w-30 oil of today? The old oil did not seem to have the same viscosity when I compared the two ( Assuming the previous owner put the correct oil in ). Also, consider that the old oil was sitting in the transmission at least 15 years. Can I use the 10w-30?Rookie
Guest imported_BaronvonR
This subject is a heated one when it comes to the oil used in these units. I use 10W non detergent which I get from my local NAPA....it takes about 8 quarts and needs to be filled to the top. I have a 51 DeSoto and a 50 Imperial and both cars do fine with it. The oil you use depends on your climate as well...I live in New England and 10W is fine...hot areas like Calif and Arizona use different oils. DO NOT use any transmission fluid as you may destroy your seals.BvR
Rusty_OToole
I never had much trouble getting 10W oil from local auto parts houses. I like to add a shot of Molyslip. Don't know if it helps but it doesn't seem to hurt. This is for the ttransmission itself. For the fluid drive I use TDH tractor oil, ISO32 grade.
