1971 Toronado - tires and radio questions

Hi...I have a '71 Toronado and am interested in trying to find some original style "triple stripe" whitewall tires (like in the brochure). Does anyone know if these are available anywhere anymore? Also...does anyone know how to safely remove the radio? I want to send it off to be worked on. Thanks for the help!!

You will probably have to have the triple whitewalls custom made. Diamondback Classics in SC does it. Not cheap, but if you want the correct look... www.widewhitewalltires.com

Removing the radio is not as daunting as it first appears. You'll have to remove the lower dash trim pad (the huge hard plastic piece below the control pods) to get at the lower support bolts, though someone with small hands may be able to reach up behind it and get it. Remove the RH pod and radio should pull forward with it far enough to get at the antenna and wiring plugs. Then remove radio from the pod.

If you're not sure, you need a 1971 factory shop manual which details the whole process. They're available on ebay and thru most literature dealers, or you may be able to find a CD copy. I can photocopy the radio removal section for you, but if you own the car, you need the proper service books for it.

I got some double stripes for my vista from Diamondback and they are great. Comparison to my orignal double stripe spare shows that the placement on this tire looks very correct. Nice guy who does nice work. He takes a 3/4" whitewall tire and uses a router on the middle 1/4". He also smooths the imprints off the outside of the tire upon request so you can keep everybody guessing. He is amenable to about anything, it seems. I'm sure you could call him to check on the triple.

Wow, I had not heard of anyone mention one of these cars in a long time. I used to have a like new, 71' Toronado back in the early 90s of and would not mind having it back. However, my aunt crashed it (not badly), but back then, it was really not a collectible car and I think we ended up selling it for junk. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
