do you reproduce factory slop too?

On my 67 mustang there are a few things on it from the factory that look messy but were there. Like the seem sealer that driped into the engine compartment or the exterior color oversprayed on undercarage and into the wheel wells. Do we repeat those things or make the cars look nicer then original? I know that clubs like the MCA like to see these details, but i have not seen them on any cars at AACA shows.

Hi Sparky65, Welcome to the forums.

I saw one example of restoration at Hershey several years ago that would make most people turn up their noses. I wish I could remember the kind of car but I can't. Anyway, the hole in the firewall where wires came through looked awful. Like someone had taken the oldest, crummiest brush and dipped it in tar and just daubed it on. Turns out that is what was done orginially as they came down the line. There was a can with tar in it, an old crummy brush and they slopped on on the hole and then fished the wires through.

The owner had his factory documentation and so no points were taken off. But it sure looked like someone did a bad job at first look.

Over restoration does not gain extra points nor remove points. On the other hand incorrect resoration can cause major points to be taken off. An example is painting the car a color that was not available is incorrect restoration. Doing a neater job than the factory did is usually considered over restoration and so does not harm or help the score.

Marque shows can get pretty sticky, from what I hear, that cars should look exactly like they came from the factory. Warts and all. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Thanks actually didnt realize this was here until i wanted to check on something for Hershey and saw the link. I probaby should read more before i ask questions, i see some other posts that basicly answer my questions. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Its just odd that overrestoration doesnt remove points how would you document this stuff becouse i am sure under restoration removes points. I have tons of pictures i took of the car as it was disasembled but no factory documentation. From what i have learned from other mustang enthusists much of the sales literature had pictures of doctored mustangs. I mean special attention was put into the first ones to make them look nicer then the rest that would come flying of the line when production ramped up. Also much of this stuff changed from day to day as it depended on whether the seem sealer guy was having a bad day and just let it dribble all over or this was his first day on the job and wanted to do a really good job. So are pictures enough and how many should one bring to a show? Do you bring pictures of similar cars that you have seen to back up your own findings? My father never had to do any of this stuff with his Model A but then again it could be an overrestoration so there was no need for documentation. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Steve, Good person for you to get in touch with is Randall Stone. He is a big Mustang person and also happens to be the VP of Techincal something or other (for got the hold title) of AACA Judging. If you go the AACA main page and go to the about us section his email is listed on one of the pages. Can't remember the title of that page either.

By the way, What happens to a Mustang when it grows up?
