Guest jimrie
Hi all,I have a restored 1938 President with a straight 8 engine. After running at higher speeds for some time and the engine reaches operating temperature I can hear a loud whistling sound coming from around the top of the engine. On acceleration the tone of the whistling changes but at idle it is constant. After the engine idles for some time and cools down a bit the sound fades away. Any ideas what could be causing the sound?
Rooster
Yes ! You have a vacuum leak somewhere , that is air is being sucked in to the engine but not through the carb. It would most likely be a gasket leak where the carb sits on the intake manifold or the intake manifold gasket where it bolts on to the head. There may be other places but these will be the most common. Good luckKen.
rbk
Take a piece of 1/4 plastic tubing, stick it in your ear and listen where the wistle comes from. You can also do this more elegant by buying a cheap stetoscope at Pep boys.Try tighening the bolts around the carburator and intake.R.B.Kapteyn
