'31 Steering Gear Box Oil

According the service manual it states use Heavy Oil to fill top off Steering Gear Box. Does anyone know what type oil this may be?

Mine was empty last year or so filled it with 80w90 gear oil but it has all leaked out. Has anyone ever pull one off? I need advice on how to go about it or is there some kind of sealer I can add to the oil that would stop if from leaking?

Thanks

P.S. Look at me and my car. That is what have been taken my time up these past few months.

Can you tell where it's leaking? There's not many places it can leak out. If it's made the same as '29 then there are bolts around the outside edge, where inner and outer parts mate up, that could be loose. With the '29, the box and steering column are an assembly that have to removed together. Usually the Pitman-arm is very difficult to remove from box. Does the '31 have all the switch wires and linkage connected to bottom end of box? If so, the switch and lever assemblies have to be removed along with the steering-wheel and dash-hanger-clamp. There are 3 tubes (for activating the lights, throttle, etc), inside of each other, inside the column, (and the horn wire inside the smaller inner tube) that need to be removed up thru wheel end of column, before pulling the column thru firewall. Then there are four large bolts that mount box to frame and the column assembly has to be droped out thru the firewall. The horn button and steering wheel are difficult to remove, without breaking something, if you don't know how.

If it's like the '29, I would first try anything and everything before trying to remove the steering-box.

I would first find where it's leaking and tighten anything that is loose and then use 600W oil. It takes a very big hole for 600W to leak thru, and I know it works okay, cause that's what I used in my 626 steering box.

Hi Rick,

It sure is just like the '29. I am not sure where it is leaking from hard to tell. I did clean it up the best I can last night (kind of cold here yet) and refilled it with the 80w90 (is this weight okay?) gear oil I had. I will have to wait and see where it may be coming from.

Will it hurt driving it without oil (not that I will be driving it to soon. I need to get engine back together yet)?

Thanks

The 80W is Okay, if it doesn't leak out. But they didn't use that 'light weight stuff' originally.

I guess it depends on how much you 'See-Saw' the steering-wheel, as to how long it would take to damage the gears and bearings in a dry box. But I wouldn't want to test it.

Rick,

Thanks. My in-laws have a second home in Indiana we take Route 30 or it is US 30 out there. On 30 there is this a Oil Distributor store I can't think of the name right now but I should stop in there on our next trip out and see if they carry 600w.

600W steam cylinder oil is what I would use!!!

This is very thick sticky oil.

It is still available from Shell and Mobil

Mobil 600W Cylinder oil #98K814-601260

This is one of Mobil's oldest products...It was once used by the railroads on their steam engines!!! Still very much in use today...BUT...very hard to find!!!

Some Heavy Equipment (Bulldozer + older heavy equipment)suppliers as well as farm tractor suppliers!!! (this is where I buy mine in 5 gallon pails.

Don't worry about the "Steam Cylinder" name!!!

Call Mobil at their regional supply center for a supplier near you 800 227 1808 (Reit oils)

I do have to wonder WHY your lube keeps leaking out...Is there a worn seal or bearing on the pittman arm shaft???

GOOD LUCK!!!

Brad,

Thanks for the Mobil 600W Cylinder oil number and phone number. I will check some local AutoParts Store around here also.

It could be a worn seal or bushing on the pitman arm. ut maybe when I get some of the 600W oil it won't leak as bad.

I doubt that you will find 600W in any local auto store!!! I have not seen it there in years!

A farm Tractor OR Heavy Equipment (Bulldozer)supplier or a lube supplier that deals with industrial accounts might be the only sorce...

I have not seen 600W in any auto parts store in the Philadelphia area ...and NAPA does not stock it in this area!!!

You stated a farm Tractor or Heavy Equipment (Bulldozer) supplier. A friend of mine works for a Truck transmission and rear end rebuild shop, I wonder if they carry it or can get it. I will have to give him a call.

My friend advises me:

Quote:

Re the post on 31 steering gear, many seem to think that 600W gear oil is hard to find. This is the standard lubricant for Model A for trans and rear ends, and Snyders 2006 catalog shows it on page A-93 at $6 per quart.

$42.00 for 5 gallon sounds like a good buy. I hope it's in gallon jugs and not 20 individual quarts.

Randy,

I am not sure what it comes in but he told me the minimum you can buy is 5 gals. Looks like I will be placing an order and pick it up when I am back out that way in June.

Does anyone know of hand how much is need for Steering, Trans and Differential? I am at work now and don't have my manual handy.
