jeff
I need a clutch gear, counter gear, and high speed syncho for my '38 Special gearbox. Any leads? How about interchange-ability with other years or other GM products?I will also rebuild the torque ball seal with a new kit. Has anyone gone to the effort of re-plating the copper / tin surfaces? Mine are a bit rough, but don't know how to go about refinishing. On the gearbox currently in the car, I just slipped in a new kit. It seems to work pretty well (occasional drip), but I suppose it could be better!
jerry burger
jeff, olds and pontiac have a different case than buick because of the open driveline.most of the internal gears however will interchange.buick changed there cases a little in different years.but gears from 38 to 53 will change. Guest DaveCorbin
Dear Jeff: I saw the post about parts from other GM gearboxes being interchangeable, which is generally true IF you know that there are 2 DIFFERENT sizes of gearboxes. The big series gearbox is used behind the big Buick 320 engine in the Century, Roadmaster, and Limited cars and on the Cadillacs and LaSalles. Nothing in the big box will interchange with the gearbox for a Special. Regards, Dave Corbin
