Automatic Transmission Question

Recommended Posts

I just got off the phone with AAMCO...

Seems that my transmission has seen better days, heck there are LOTS of miles on it so I guess that's to be expected.

I'm sure I read somewhere that there is a drop-in FOUR SPEED AUTOMATIC that can be used in place of the stock 3 speed. Is this true? Is it a good idea?

For around 1.5k parts and labor I can get my rebuild with a lifetime warranty...

Advice?

Man, sounds high for a measley 3 speed Chrysler. I had a late model 4 speed Chrysler minivan done for that amount and also a Mark 8 Lincoln for 1600.

Would love to hear about a 4 speed that fits-I'd sell you my decent 3 speed cheaply if I found one.

And remember that Aamco is an anagram for Maaco-same guy started it, Anthory A Martino Co. if that has any bearing. You know MAACOs quality or lack of it.

I would check with Hemi for a good shop in CA. A lot of "factory rebuilds list the same transmission for Naturally aspirated N/A and turbos. The turbo has a 3,500 rpm stall speed. IE you can rev to 3,500 standing still. Not recommended but it means the turbo will spool faster. With the wrong converter, it will be a slug. Unfortunately the two best TD transmission rebuilders are Cliff Ramsdell in Ct. and Joe dizwill in Canada. They can build the 413 for 400-500 hp with a torque biasing diferential which is useless unless you need it. I agree with the statement about AMMCO.

Jeff, just remembered your directions on the manual boost controller. The only car that came with an automatic and full TII was the 87 Shelby Lancer. I think Mopar learned that the 413 wouldn't take 175 hp.

Now however, you can modify it to take 4-500 hp.

I can't find the page with pics for installing the quaife or OBX diff in the 413. It requires a spacer. Nobody has started manufacture of the spacer yet.You should also get a better torque converter. FDWperformance sells a steet strip one. There is another page about installing extra clutch packs. I'll post the rest of the links when I find them. I don't know if Hemi is up on this sort of thing. The mopartek link is Cliff Ramsdell that will sell you the complete setup.

During the "Mopars at the Strip" event in Vegas this year I entered the burn out contest with my Quaife equiped 16V Mas powered GLHS. My display was over two minutes worth at 6500 rpms in second gear and I was going to keep going until the tires blew but I chucked the H2O belt and had to let off. The announcer was very anti FWD and goaded the audience into voting for a 70 E body car that spun the tires for less than a minute. At least a half dozen folks came up to me afterwards and told me I should have won. Yes, the Quaife is a nice piece of equipment for a high HP FWD car <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
