I have been told that this was a December 76 black stripe option. I guess just over 2k were made. I have ordered the restoration pack from GM but just wondered if anyone here might know any info about these cars. Thanks, Brian

Brian, Great looking SkyHawk! It's great to see this one restored or preserved so beautifully. Sorry can't help you with the info you are looking for, I always thought I wouldn't mind having one with the "NightHawk" package.

Keith thanks! I am the third owner and this car has been preserved. Just under 10k miles. Buick had quite a few variations of these cars (Night Hawk, Road Hawk, Free-Spirit). I hope the restoration pack from GM confirms what I have been told about the car. If not that is OK. Brian

I received the resto pack this week and it included all the RPO codes for my car. DL1 option Decals & Stripes - Hawk Accent, thats the stripe package on my car. The bad thing is GM Canada does not have production numbers for this package. Anyone have an idea on how I can find this information? I think it may be out there because the last owner was told by an auctioneer that there were just over 2k made. Hopefully that number was not a fabrication and I can find some documented proof. Any help is appreciated! Brian

Howdy...are you in Canada, or is it just a Canadian car? I presume you have talked to GM Canada Vintage Services...1-888-467-6853, outside Canada, they can be reached at 905-644-4060 or 905-644-3387. I don't know at what point they turn stuff over to the vintage folks though.

Good luck. Only thing I can find is 24,044 total model year production for the two models of hatch back...it appears they were all built in Canada according to the Standard Catalog of Buick.

Hey Derek, no I live in the States. Yes I have talked to George Zapora at GM Canada. They do not have a production number for any of the stripe package cars. The only breakdown they provided from the 24k SkyHawks made for 77 is the V6 and TH350 trans combo compared to any other transmissions. tongue.gif So I hope the info is out there. Thanks, Brian

Sure, (905) 440-7636 or (905) 440-7618. George Zapora is the Vintage Specialist I'm sure he will help you out. It cost us Buick fans $50.00 but the Chevy guys get theirs for free frown.gif The world is just not fair, Brian P.S. Derek posted some other numbers (and I'm sure they will work also) but these are the ones that came with my resto pack. I have called George Z. a couple times since from these numbers.

I'd trust stage169's phone numbers over mine...I grabbed mine off something they sent me a number of years ago, although the toll free number for Canadian calls ought to be OK.

Well, I paid full-price for the Packet for my '95 Corvette, so the "Chevy guys" don't get theirs free! At least this one didn't. George is a nice person to deal with & the turnaround time is a couple weeks.

I'm just glad this information is available.

Joel, sorry you had to pay. I based my comment on the other H body guys I know. The guys with the Monza's got theirs free. I agree that George Z. is nice to deal with and in my case I couldn't find the build sheet on the car. So now I have all the RPO codes for my car documented. Although there was no description of the Hawk Accent stripe package I called and he sent me a copy of that but not the complete page of literature that the description was on. I know that there is more info and he probably has access to it but.... I even offered to pay again for additional info but he stuck to his guns and said any research is done from a VIN only. I wonder if they give tours grin.gif Brian

I have found H-body buildsheets underneath the carpeting...usually in the front-seat area. Have you by chance looked there? I've been collecting build sheets out of cars for years. Sometimes, they are located under the front-seat springs & I've actually seen a few glued to the upper part of the front-seat frame facing the rear.

I guess it depends on the plant though.

Beautiful car by the way -- that white interior is awesome.

I did look under the drivers front seat. Not to serious though I just put my hand under the carpet where I could. I've taken both front seat back covers off and the back seats out. Took a pen light with the door glass down and looked in the door. I also got my hands above the gas tank but so far I haven't found it. I guess if I really wanted to find it I would take more of the car apart to find it. Its just hard for me to do that now. This car came from a time warp. I got it home and removed undercoating from the paint. Even the rust prevention wax that they used was still around the drain holes at the rear quarters. There was even a run of that type of wax on the rocker just under and at the back of the drivers door. At the back of the headliner is a metal trim piece that was missing a screw. When I removed the back seats there it was sitting on the floor. That in itself is now big deal but I struggled trying to put it back. So I removed the trim piece to look at what I was up against and that screw had never been installed. It is now but what are the odds after 28 years? It has been a lot of fun so far and thank you for the compliments. I just got a response from an email I sent to Buick.com. They are going to try and find production numbers for me so I hope that pans out. Brian

Buick.com response. I tried.

Dear Mr. Jackson,

Thank you for your patience while I have been researching your request for SkyHawk production information.

The Production figures for the 1975-1980 SkyHawk are:

1975- 30,631

1976- 32,927

1977- 24,043

1978- 24,590

1979- 23,139

1980- 8,322

I apologize that I do not have a more detailed breakdown available to you, but I do hope that this is helpful and informative.

Again, I thank you for contacting Buick.

Sincerely,

Kelsey Booth

I purchased the Standard Catalog of Buick from John Gunnell. I emailed him to ask his sources for his book. Here is his response.

Your book will be mailed today. I own a '57 Buick Century but my son is interested in the later-model Buicks and helps me sort those out quite a bit. They built 24,044 Skyhawks in 1977. That includes both Series S and Series T models. Since they were built in Canada, the U.S. trade magazines such as Ward's do not include Skyhawks in the charts they publish showing what percentage of total production carried each option.

John Gunnell

So then I email George Zappora to ask if Canada has any auto trade magazines that could have information on the 75-80 Skyhawks. His response.

Brian no publications that i know of. Here data was kept internal to GM. remember you are dealing with 25 to 30 year old data, just as computers were coming online. In the old days computer info was stored on huge tape discs, now with downsizing it is too expensive to keep that info available, so most was destroyed as it reached the end of its useful life. If a company builds 30,000 units one year and you only get asked for info on maybe 2 of those cars every 20 years it is not cost effective to have it available. Sorry coukd not be of more help, regards, George

I have emailed Ward's but have no response yet. I think my next angle might be some older Buick dealerships across the country that could have some info. I don't know I think I'm about to the dead end of hope mad.gif Maybe a auto auction place like Auburn or something. Maybe they have some good research sources.

On another note a fellow H body member has been contacted from a person in Austria that purchased a Nighthawk that use to belong to their last emperor's daughter. She parked it in 86 because of her sight (age) and the car was rediscovered in 2004. The Nighthawk is the only H body Buick that was not included/mentioned in Buick's sales catalogs. It is in excellent shape, here is a pic. Brian

I have seen a brochure or advertisement for the "Night" Hawk in my travels - it shows the stripe "reflecting" at night - it is a kewl concept - always wanted to see one at night to see how much they really reflected.

I have never seen one in person but here is a link to my H body friends web site that has a pic at the top right with a night/day comparison. Also another Nighthawk he found with pic's. On some the flash was used and gives you a good idea even though the pic was during the day. Brian

16 years ago....  Well I did find out option totals for my car from Sloan Museum.  Of the 6 years of production they had 4 Domestic and Export car reports for the Buick H body.  Missing 78 & 79.

1,887 Skyhawk's for 1977 received the option DL1 (Hawk Accent Stripe Package).  525 were in the color black like mine.

Now if somebody out there could help with an odd option shown on the report for a 1977 Skyhawk.  RPO L77 (350 V8 4bbl engine)?  I would guess if they documented that engine then one was made with it.  Really not a stretch since all the brackets would of worked.  Probably didn't have A/C.  But I need ideas for researching this thing.  I've exhausted about every avenue.
