Custom built Buicks

I have recently purchased a '63 riviera in good overall condition w/77,000 original miles. It has a GM dash plate that states it was custom built for an individual, a local bank president in the early 60's. I have the original purchase order for the car and this seems to be correct. Was this common whith buicks of this period?

I had a '67 Wildcat with such a plaque, but I knew the history from new, and the original owner bought it off the dealer's show room floor. The plaque was attached by the dealer before delivery. Don't know if this is always the case or not.
