1946 Gas Gauge/Sender question

The gas gauge on my 46 Roadmaster works fine when the engine is not running, but every time the engine is running, even when parked, the needle swings rapidly back and forth through the whole sweep, making it impossible to figure out an average reading. Is it supposed to act like this, or what gives?

Thanks,

Jyrki

The problem is possibly a loose wire or terminal on the back of the fuel gauge or at the fuel tank sender unit. When the car is running there maybe enough vibration to make the terminal connect and disconnect, causing the fluctuation in the reading. When the car is not running the terminal is steady and gives an accurate reading.

Thanks for the suggestions. At least now I know it shouldn't be like that!

All wires are new. It could also be the voltage drop - I converted from 6V to 12V system, and are using a voltage drop for gas gauge. I will let you know if I can find the cause. Thanks.
