1953 Chrysler Oil

'53 Windsor

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I just got a '53 Chrysler Windsor Deluxe, and I was told that it doesn't matter what kind of oil I put in it. Then I was told to use non-detergent oil, but someone else disagreed with that and said to use detergent oil. So, what do I use? Also, if you have any other helpful information on the car, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi

Curious on the type of oil. What did you decide to put in the Chrysler -- detergent or non detergent oil?

Thanks

I recently got a 53 Chrysler [haven't gotten the engine free yet but working on it .. it is soaking BP Blaster and fuel oil ..

But was wondering what is used in them ..

Thanks

Gary

From what I have been told.

Detergent oil is design to keep the dirt suspended in the oil so it can be filtered out.

So with that as a rule, If you has an oil filter use detergent oil.

If It doesn't have an oil filter do not use detergent oil.

the other info I have been told. is, if it is and old engine and you don't know what it looks like inside DO NOT use detergent oil.

If it has been overhauled and you know it is clean inside, you can use either.

I know when I pulled my 1916 Elgin apart there was and good inch of dirt in the bottom of the pan, I guess that is where it is supposed to go when you use non detergent oil. If I would have used detergent oil, it could have stirred up all the dirt and splashed it though out the engine.

Jay ..

I have never heard that before .. but makes sense ...

I don't think my engine has an oil filter ...

I imagine I should use non detergent oil .. if I get it to run ..

Thanks so much for your input .. I sincerely appreciate it ..
