brad54
Does the 364 Nailhead have a big dome on it like the earlier 322s, or is it a flat top like a 401? Just curious.Thanks,-Brad
Mrbuick714
the 53 322 has the really big dome From 54 up,the dome varied (in 56, for example, the dome was lower on stick-shift cars). In 1966 we raced a 401 with O.S. 364 pistons because the dome was a wee bit higher on the 364 pistons than it was on the 401 pistons. We won at the drag strip on a regular basis with this set-up. brad54
typically, anything above the last piston ring is referred to as the "dome." A thicker dome means more above the last ring, which would increase compression. The '53-up 322s had a real tall,....well, "dome'd" dome. It was like a pop-up piston, that went above the deck of the block. The '53 322 almost looks like a hemi piston. The '56 has a popped-up wedge with cut-outs for the valves. (looks like a 14:1 CR 327 Chevy piston I saw once). Is the piston on a 364 flush with the deck when at the top of the stroke, or does a portion of the piston stick up past the deck and into the head's combustion chamber?Anybody rebuilt a 364 lately?-brad
