1955 Olds Engine Question

Recommended Posts

I need to know if I put a socket on the crankshaft nut should I be able to turn the engine over by hand?

I tried doing this and couldnt get it to budge. Am I overlooking something?

I have removed the generator, belts and the fan.

My car has been sitting for several years, covered or in garages, without being started. I am doing a "needed parts" rebuild just to get it running, not a full teardown.

thanks

Glen

The rings maybe frozen in place by cylinder wall oxidation. I'm assuming you've already taken out the plugs. Try some Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder and after soaking overnight try gently rocking the crankshaft back and forth. Repeat as needed, too much torque will likely break the rings. Best of luck!

Umph. Another Glen, going by "Rocketrider". This is about to get weird... <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

There's another Glen Williamson here in town who fools with old Chevy trucks, so when the name is mentioned in old car circles here, people have to specify "Oldsmobile Glenn" or "Chevy truck Glen".

Anyhow- welcome, nice choice of car. If the Mystery Oil doesn't work, pour some diesel fuel down the cylinders and allow to soak a few days.

Yes I saw a post you made after I became a member, and I though to myself Ive never been here before how can I have a post?

kind of set me back for a second.

Dont take is as me stealing a nick, In the fifties my dad was in a club called Rocketriders that consisted of mainly Oldsmobiles and he was the one who designed the drag plates.

So after me getting my car in 83, I grabbed the name.
