Carb / Starting ???

55PACKARD

Recommended Posts

Well i cant figure this one out I put a rebuilt carb on and im running no choke right now,it starts fine when cold,I mean it starts on the first shot. But after i drive it for a while park it let it sit, then go back to start it all it does is crank. The only way i can get it to kick over i have to put my foot down on the gas pedal to get it to fire over, once it starts again it runs fine. Oh yeah it did it with the old carb to i replaced the old because the carb had a flat spot plus the shaft was worn...Any ideas...Thanks.....

could be vapor locking on you, try running the gas lines away from the engine as far as possible. some cars had heat sheilds that would keep exhaust heat from the pump, my packard came with one. they dont look like anything special just a piece of bent sheet metal that sits level with the ground just above the pump and down the rear of the pump. this leaves the front of the pump open to air flow but shields it from the heat of the engine. try giving it a few pumps before you try and start when hot, i usually give it 2 full pumps then put my foot about 1/4 1/3 way to the floor and it will start right up.

just a thought

i'm not sure what u mean by 'running with no choke'. Does that mean no choke blade in the carb???

The condition u describe sounds like en excessively rich fule mixture. Make sure the choke blade is wide open when startin hot because sometimes it can suck closed or partially closed. Also check the ignition TIMING.

Yup, too rich. In addition to the choke blade, it could also be a leaking needle-seat.

Take the air cleaner off and observe the carb under both cold and warm startup. A mis-adjusted choke blade will be easy to spot. A leaking needle seat is harder, but would result in dripping or spilling fuel in to the carb. Also, black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe.

Thanks guys ...Well i meant that i run no choke the blade is wide open,no black smoke on start up just a little hard starting when hot..I will try to pump the gas a couple times and see what it does, and if i do keep the gas pedal down about 1/4 to 1/2 it does start up i just thought that was weird to have to touch the gas pedal at all....

Thanks for that awesome explanation..I think my timing is pretty decent as for my carb setting i wouldnt know i bought the carb from Kanter's bolted in on and the car started up and ran fine no miss no flat spots so i left it alone..Its possible its getting vapor lock how do i correct that? Is it possible to use a small carb spacer or what??? Oh yeah my car doesnt have points anymore either im running the pertronix with the better coil plus im using resistor plugs and supression type wires too....

Haven't heard of Packards having problems with vapor lock and especially this time of year. Be sure your hot air choke tube is not stressing the choke system; by that I mean, I had a problem with one of my cars of it running way to rich and fouling plugs in under 30 miles. It was caused by too rich a mixture caused by the choke not opening all the way. Turns out with the "gasket stack" used under the carburetor to curtail vapor lock, the choke heat tube was pulling on the choke system so it did open well. Just be careful with the spacer distance and the hot tube. Did you make sure the hot tube heats up to open the choke? If it doesn't, you can get an electric choke.

Well to tell you the truth the choke is wired wide open right now the heat tube broke off in the intake and i am wanting to find a part number for the electric choke, but my problem isnt starting when cold its when i drive it for maybe a 20 to 30 minute drive after i shut it off then later when i go start it i have to hit the gas for it to kick over..It starts ever time just a pain to have to press the gas pedal and make it crank for a few seconds till it starts.... <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

GM 8182C is what my local carb. rebuilder provided me and I found it on this site above. Must get the type for the 4GC and that is what this is, for the Rochester. To properly ground the choke, you leave the rubber insulator ring off. I hooked power up to the ignition switch or fuse box. It took me about three tries to get it set properly. I would think NAPA or CarQuest could obtain one.
