55 Ford VIN Decode

Recommended Posts

A California built 1955 Ford convertible (comming back to life) has 5 digits at the end of the VIN. I guess this is some kind of production sequence number. Is there any connection between this number and the serial number? Does this number mean anything?

The build date is 21 D. I could not find a decode to go from the letters to the build month, but am guessing that D is April. Is there any way to verify that D is April and that this car was built on April 21 1955?

Happy Holidays

Your patent plate (or body tag) is on the left front door pillar along with the Vin tag.The serial number on both tags should match.

The vin tag decodes as:

1st digit engine: A=223,6cylM=272,8cyl,4BC U=272,8cyl,2BC P=292,8cyl

2nd digit: 5=year 1955

3rd digit assenmbly plant: (list of 15 different plants)

4th body style:

last six basic production number: (100001 & up)

The pantent plate details the body type (16 codes), 16 exterior colors, and 23 different trim color materials.

The production date code gives the day of month,Month of year, what number car (my understanding is the number on that day). So your car is April 21, 1955.

I hope this helps. If you would like more details please let me know.
