Guest
Hi,I've owned my Red Reatta for 11 years, new tranny at 87k, new struts, IPC, r34 conversion etc. at 103k and currently at 105k miles, it is starting to sound like a diesel. When I accelerate under load. Could this be an air conditioner compressor going out? The air is working ok and I have no error codes. Any ideas? help is appreciated. Thanks,Rich
Guest EDBS0
Is the compressor loud at idle? Don't know about the Reatta but most cars have an compressor lock out when under wot and the compressor should stop.Oil pressure OK?
Guest
Oil pressure ok, not noisy at idle, only on initial acceleration and light to medium load. It disappears under very heavy acceleration.
Guest EDBS0
And ... in economy mode with the air off it sounds like??? The compressor will not be running then.
Guest
It does the same thing in economy mode. It almost acts like a leaking exhaust manifold. I don't even want to think about rods knocking or such...
FlyByNite
Just a thought, timing chain and tensioner rattle???
Guest
I get a slight chain rattle sometimes at idle until I add some rpm's. As for the tensioner, I don't know what it would sound like if it was not tight...

padgett
Being an Ohio car, an exhaust leak is a possibility though would expect max at WOT. Do you feel anything when it happens ? Secondary ignition (coilpack, wires, plugs) usually shows up at light/moderate load and low rpm. What happens if you try to accellerate slightly in o/d & lockup (1350 rpm at 47 mph) ? Any shuddering ?
Guest
I replaced the coil pack about 2 months ago. Replaced the front 3 plugs yesterday(easy to get at). I will replace the back three when I get time. Upon initial acceleration it just sounds like it is a diesel truck until I floor it and then it purrs good. I have recently been trying to trouble shoot a surging at 40-45 mph 1800-2000 rpm in high gear. Sometime it locks up and runs at 1800 rpm at 65mph. Other times it runs at 2200+ rpm at 65mph. Guest EDBS0
padgett;Do you think a bad oxygen sensor could cause the mixture to lean out and knock under load until the knock sensor takes over?Would a tank of bad gas do the same?rwarner1; do you use name brand gas? Might try topping up with some premium.
Guest
I've had multiple tanks of gas, don't think that would be it. I'm not sure about the oxygen sensor? maybe, I was thinking it could be spark knock but it doesn't sound quite like that. Car runs pretty good. I'm driving it almost every day this summer because it drives nice. I appreciate all of the input I've gotten so far especially the good news bad news probably not the compressor, thanks.I'm going to try to install the back three plugs tonight. I was thinking this may cause spark knock under load.
Guest
Found the knocking/rattle noise finally. oil pressure 49-50psi at idle, high octane fuel didn't help but when I got it home in the garage it was more noisy. Revved it up slightly and found the cat converted rattleing. I will look at it when I can get under the car. Thanks to all those who responded. I still enjoy driving this car and somehow keep putting $$ back into it. I'm not sure what this will cost me.Oh well!! This is a great forum. Thanks,Rich
padgett
Anything is possible - I take it there are no codes being set. Given the symptoms (goes away when accellerate) I would wonder if maybe you have a failing knock sensor (max advance at light load, pulls back when accellerate). Might see if there is anything odd in BLM or instantaneous when it happens. Is the type of thing where I usually hook up the laptop and record a few frames of everything while it is happening just to see what looks odd - anyone know how to use the "snapshot" mode ? Never quite figured it out since Diacom is so versitile.Much easier when in my yout when we would use much of a mile long corridor(at the plant where they made B-36s) to roll out the brush recorder charts...
