87 Silverado Pickup - Need info

Sorry for posting a pickup question on the buick site, but........ I am in the process of buying a 87 Silverado Pickup with 65K miles.

Hopefully I can clean it up and use it to haul my Reatta (BayBee) to car shows etc...... but first I need information on this vehicle.

I do know it has the fuel injection 350, was used to haul a horse trailer (has electric brake unit) and is loaded with power options, PS, PB, PW, PL, tilt wheel, and including cold AC, but other that that tain't fancy. It is the long bed version and possible is a heavy half ton.... haven't confirmed yet.

The Silverado is the top of the line model. I do know that they have high resell value- especially 4WD models. Rust is also a possible problem, unless it is from the southern or western states, but still a slight chance of some rust. I think by 87 however, they had improved the rust problem. If the truck was washed often and the paint is still good, there should be no rust problems. Good luck.

I just sold an 1988 Silverado. It had over 225 K miles, a new engine was installed by previous owner. Both cab lower corners were rusted badly, it was a local midwest vehicle. I drove it for over 3 years and it ran good, had a carb. engine, and 2 wheel drive. I have left over an original 2 volume parts book covering the CK models to 1988, and the replacement cab sheet metal corners.

Unfortunately, the 1988 model year was the new truck unless it was a Suburban type vehicle which used the '87 chassis until the new in '92 Suburban came out. The new for 1988 C/K truck came out way earlier than the traditionial fall introduction. The chassis that was previously the "C/K" chassis prior to '87 model year was now the "R/V" chassis as the new design pickup was the new "C/K" truck. These differences are reflected in the VIN number.

The earlier body truck, that dates back to the '73 year model, had door handles with pushbuttons. The new for '88 model year truck had door handles that you pulled up on to open the door. The current body style Silverado had door handles that you grab and pull toward you to open the door.

I would like to warn you that the speedometer in those old pickups is usually off by as much as 10 to 15 miles an hour. The way they work the older they get the slower they run. I had one that when it said I was driving 70 I was actually driving around 55. I have owned three of the old style pickups with the round speedometers and none were anywhere near accurate. The first thing

I did when I purchased the last 2 was to check the speedometer. I see them on the road every day and all the traffic is passing them while they look at their speedometer thinking everyone else on the road is nuts.
