58L-Y8
The interior door panels and seat upholstery are from a 1956 Studebaker President Classic which is the same 120.5" wb Y-Body as this 1958 President sedan. Upholstery kits are available to the 1956 and the overall interiors in those 1956's are much nicer than what was installed in the 1958. One feature that is a telltale is the rear seat fold-down armrest with was standard in the 1956 President Classic but not in the 1958 President so that the 1958 Packard sedan could have that feature. Other than the rusty rear bumper, if this President is mostly rust-free in the frame and body mounts and is mechanically good, it looks to be a decent deal in the right price range for an enjoyable driver-condition car. Realistically, there is no real demand for any of the 1958 Studebaker sedan-based cars except perhaps for a "Starlight" hardtop coupe. Therefore, this is the type of car one can buy to enjoy without mortgaging the house or draining the IRA account. Studebaker Drivers Club (SDC) support is robust and excellent as is the parts availability and trouble-shooting service advice, just a membership away. The 1958 sedans and wagons are an 'acquired' taste, design typical of their period, maybe not quite as extravagant as many of its contemporaries. The Studebaker-named colors are "Jewel Beige and Artic White", somewhat bland for the era. They offered a metallic red/maroon whose name escapes me (presently in Colorado without my handy references) which if the red/maroon replaced the white would really make this President visually pop.
