Guest
There is probably an original split seal available or a split graphite or rubber seal available from some auto or marine suppliers. I have repacked my Pontiac water pump with a graphited material that is available in split rings or as a roll. On ocassional I have even used cotton string with graphite. My friend has just done his '32 Pontiac and a quote from him is "The material I used was Palmetto Style 1347AF and is available from Mcmaster McMaster-Carr." Your truck will be slightly different but attached are three pictures. One is the package, two is a piece of the packing and three is a picture of the Pontiac pump. The large brass nut is loosened and the old packing is pulled out and replaced with the new packing. The gland needs to be filled so much that you can hardly get the gland nut started.. The nut should be tightened until there is a very tiny occasional drip. Do not tighten it up too tight or you can ruin the shaft.
