Pau Maurer
I'm working on a Model A 4 cyl engine and it has a scratchy, squeaking noise. I've found the front pulley loose and replaced the sleeve where the rope seal rides, but not the noise. I removed the timing gear cover and found the button on the end of the cam was on backwards and the spring was on the end of the camshaft. Turned it around and put timing gear cover back on still have noise. Pulled the distributor and it seems to turn freely. Any ideas would be helpful. To all that looked at this post: In answer to one question: The fan belt was removed, but the noise was still there, however, I did track down the noise. When my friend was starting the car I noticed a slight drip from the carburetor flange. Upon further inspection the bolts to the carburetor were loose and the gasket was bad. I replaced the gasket between the intake and the carburetor flange and the problem is gone. It appears there was a high pitch vacuum leak at the flange causing the noise. I really sounded like a bearing that was binding/squeaking. Thanks to all the read this post as well as the two the responded, Paul M..... oldford
If you remove the fan belt, does the noise stop? If so, might be the bearings in the water pump. Does it change frequency with the change in engine speed? Frank
