Removal of old rubber grommets (bumpers)

I was just wondering how any of you would handle this problem.

You need to remove an old rubber grommet (bumper) for restoration/

cleaning of a metal part it is attached to. The bumper has a "tail" &

a flare to hold it to the metal part.

I finally decided to cut most of the flare off with a razor blade, and

I was able to remove the rest of the bumper without further damage.

Also, the bumper is still useable, although it does not hold as tight

as before. The bumpers in question sit on a horizontal surface, so

holding ability is not a big deal.

Thank you for your input.
