EstateWagon79
I have a 65 Skylark with a 300-2. I just bought the car and it makes a knocking sound. Sometimes its loud and other times, it goes away. I think it might be a lifter or a valve, but I am not sure.
Can anybody help me?
Guest
I had same kind of knocking on my 64 300Hp engine. After inspection I found that camshaft had also lost one lobe. After replacement of camshaft and all the lifters knocking has not been appeared. Looks like lifter problem.
Guest
Under what conditions does it knock? Acceleration? Cold? Under load? what does it sound like? A low pitched knock may be a con rod or main bearing. A higher pitched knock at 1/2 engine speed may be a lifter. Listen to see if it comes from the top or the bottom of the engine.
Tomsriv

Guest
I have had more than one 300 with a knocking vibration dampner. If it has oil pressure when warm the valve train is the first place to go. Check for broken rockers or valve springs. then start engine with valve covers off and the knocking at it worse put your fingers on each push rod the loose one that spins in your fingers will also tap to the noise.JIM
DugsSin
Get a stethoscope. It's really a cheap tool and once you've used one you will wonder how you ever got along without it. It is amazing how well you can pin point a noise with these. Doug
EstateWagon79
Thanks for the advice. The engine knocks at idle and also when accelerating. Sometimes it goes away, and other times it's constant. It sounds like its coming from the top of the engine.
I did discovered a broken spark plug wire, but after changing it, it still knocks.
