Guest scott mich bca # 6619
The top pump motor cylinder on my convertable now leaks, only after I changed the fluid from brake to transmission fluid. It worked fine before, and fine after. I flushed it well. A few months after the oil change it started leaking between the motor and resovior, the end plate and resovior, and even thru the plug.
I bought a rebuilding kit, changed all the rubber seals, it held for a few days, then leaked again.

Any suggestions?
Thanks, Scott
old-tank
Scott
Sounds like my story exactly. I finally gave up and bought a new pump...just used the old reservior to retain the old mountings.
Willie
Guest
The original system used brake fluid ( DOT 3). Have other people used ATF without problems?
Frank DuVal
Guest scott mich bca # 6619
Willie,

What kind of fluid are you using in your unit? Did you change from one type to another? If you did, what procedure did you follow? I would buy a new pump if I knew that it would work. The company that I bought the rebuilding kit from and also sells rebuilt pumps. They said their rebuilder recommends DO NOT USE TRANSMISSION FLUID. It voids the warranty. When I questioned why, their response was that's what the rebuilder says!
I'm afraid if I buy a new pump, unless I use brake fluid, it my just leak too.
Scott
old-tank
Scott
I use transmission fluid which is what was recommended by Buick specialists where I bought the parts: cylinders, hoses and pump. I bought a rebuild kit from a Chevy supplier (didn't last) before I bought a complete pump.
Try not to use brake fluid...you will have a corrosive mess instead an oily mess if there leaks; also brake fluid is corrosive and will form sludge inside the system. (this is true of gylcol based brake fluids...silicone brake fluid may work)
Willie
Guest scott mich bca # 6619
Willie,

I must of bought the same kit form the same Chevy supplier, somewhere on the west coast.
It lasted a few days, and then all over!! But they were the ones that said no transmission fluid. I guess I'll call Jim at Buick Specialists.
Thanks,
Scott
Moby II
Years ago I had my '53 Roadmaster Conv. top cylinder rebuilt when restoring the car. Old gentleman in Texas did the rebuild and sold me a synthetic fluid (yellow in color). It worked perfectly. (No longer have the car, unfortunately). At the same time a friend with a '53 Skylark rebuilt his but used transmission fluid. After spending 50k on the restoration he decided he didn't want to spend the extra $$ for the special fluid. So he used transmission fluid. It started leaking within days. Unfortunately the older gentleman has passed on, but perhaps someone is familiar with this synthetic fluid. Good luck to you.
