Guest
Go back to Forums and do a search "bolt torque" you will find 1149 results. All very interesting to read. Real mechanics and shade tree mechanics in the old days tightened bolts to the point that JFranklin mentioned. That also was the instructions in shop manuals at the time. It was the 40's before torque wrenches were common. I never owned a torque wrench until about ten years ago and never broke a bolt putting it in and never had a head gasket leak even when using a third hand one. Have broke many bolts trying to take them out. For head bolts I always used a 1/2 inch drive ratchet and tightened them up with one hand. After I got my torque wrench I discovered that this method gave me about 55 foot pounds.
