Rod Frazier
I (foolishly?) bought an N.O.S. pump for my '40 Century and am wondering if I have to rebuild it with modern components to withstand ethanol fuel. Any opinions?
trimacar
Yes, absolutely. It will last a while, but the ethanol will attack the robber in the diaphragm, causing it to wrinkle and fail.I've had two older pumps do just that, one on my Pierce and one on my Cord. The Cord pump diaphragm looked like a waffle.
Rod Frazier
Well, isn't that a fine kettle of fish. If the gaskets will survive, can the diaphragm be purchased separately?
buick5563
I would just buy a full rebuild kit. Use the diaphragms, but you shouldn't need to replace the check valves. (Nickel sized parts that are peened in place. I have successfully done this before, but I would not even install it without at least the diaphragm replacement. Even if ethanol free gas was readily available, you would still be dealing with really old, possibly dry-rotted rubber.
