Fuel strainer in tank

I just dropped my gas tank on a '61 Metropolitan and discovered on the pickup tube a strainer. My thoughts are to get rid of the strainer and put an inline filter before the fuel pump which is cam driven.

Any thoughts pro or con on this?

Go ahead, it won't hurt anything. New cars have a plastic strainer that slips over a plain steel tube. One of those will fit if the original is shot. The one in the tank is kind of a coarse strainer, you need a fine filter besides.
