26Willys
What have you guys used for connecting rod bolts? Are there bolts for something else that will fit? They are .5-20x2.25. Thanks
cahartley
I can't imagine why any grade 8 cap screw won't do the job. They are bit difficult to drill but a sharp bit and a slowish speed WILL do the job.
Guest Wayfarer
Grade 8 cap screws ???!! What engine are you dealing with? Yes, plenty of interchange available but the ½" is a bit puzzling.
26Willys
The engine is a 1921 Dodge 4 cylinder.I would think grade 8 would be strong enough?
cahartley
Most likely you would have to grind off one side of the head so it would seat on the upper half.We JUST re-shimmed the rod bearings on my '25 but I can't recall what size the bolts are. It seems we used an 11/16" socket so they would be 7/16".
26Willys
Yes, they would have to be ground off. I looked around online and couldn't find anyplace that has grade 8 castellated nuts. I see a lot of guys use the aircraft self locking nuts on Model Ts.
cahartley
You don't need gd 8 nuts.Even FINDING full castle nuts is getting harder and harder........ You CAN get gd 5 slotted nuts. Might be room to double nut them........ :confused:Double nuts are actually more secure than singles anyway.http://www.mcmaster.com/#castle-nuts/=s4iu7m
Guest Wayfarer
If there is need to lock the nut then use Loctite. The issue with self locking nuts is getting a proper torque reading, however, with this engine it may not be a big concern.
26Willys
Thanks. I'll let you guys know what I end up using.
26Willys
I took a closer look at the bolts and nuts. The threads on the bolts looked great, but the threads in the nuts were starting to roll. I used the original bolts and found some new castellated nuts at Fastenal.
