SEALED BEARINGS VERSUS NON-SEALED

On this 1918 Cadillac it has a fan shaft housing that runs the fan on one end and distributer, etc on other. The original 2 bearings for the shaft were open bearings that were lubricated from the camshaft timing chain. I have both types of new bearings but am leaning to use the sealed bearing. Appreciate the feedback.

I like the sealed bearings; one less bearing to worry about. All car makers use them today, and Cadillac would have in 1918 if they were available. The caveat: be certain that the bearing doesn't require oil to circulate through it for some reason (such as to reach another lubrication point).

If it was an external greased bearing I'd go with the less trouble of a maintenance free sealed bearing but since yours is internally oiled I'd go with the self lubricating open bearings and let them take care of themselves as they were designed to do.
