1951 Buick Special Starter Supply?

Okay so diagnosed my starting problem as the starter. On a bench the starter engages but turns very slow so I expect a rebuild is in order. Do you know if these rebuilds can be obtained? Or do you need to go to a starter rebuild service? Will any other 50 GM 6 volt starters work as I have access to a old car part suppler who has 100's of used ones?

As far as the starter motor itself, only 51 special or super will work. For armatures, 39-52 super and special, 53 special, 50-53 caddy, 38-54 Chevy, 52-54 Henry j (delco remy), and 51-54 Nash series 60 with hydromatic will interchange

Starter motor issues are a common problem with age and mileage.

Repair may be beyond what most enthusiasts want to tackle, but disassembly, testing and evaluation are straightforward. A reliable auto/electrical technician can evaluate and advise.

Replacing the brushes, bushings and drive may be all it needs...see Rockauto.com.

If that doesn't help you local starter/alternator rebuilder should be able to help.
