Anyone seen anything like this?

RivNut

I was pulling the front drums off the '63 parts car and encountered something I'd never seen before. "Micro-Nuts" were used in place of castle nuts to hold the hubs on. They're installed by putting the hex nut on the spindle with the spline side facing out. The Micro-nut is then slipped over the splines aligning the groves with the cotter pin hole in the spindle. It looks as if they're almost infinitely adjustable.

Ed,

I have never seen these on automobiles but modern trucks have a very similar locking axle nut. Looks like a more precise adjustment of the wheel bearings is possible with this locknut...although I must admit I have never had problems with the simpler and less expensive factory castle nut.
