I got a universal set of spiral cores and crimping the distributor ends and trying to slide the boot on is a pain in the ass! How are lengths, etc. on BBC wire sets or others? Guest Posted April 9, 2002 Share Posted April 9, 2002 You should be able to get a set from any auto parts store..like Checker or Auto Zone or even NAPA. I just called a Checker in the area they have a HEI set for a 76 455. The Autolite part # is 86280. That is what I have on my 455.....They are also lifetime warranty...Make sure they are not looking up a 75 because that should still be a points system. NTX5467 Posted April 10, 2002 Share Posted April 10, 2002 HEI appeared in spring production vehicles in 1974 becoming standard on all GM V-8s in 1975 as part of the catalytic converter enhanced emission system stuff, just as radials were standard that same year too for better fuel economy.<P>There are listings out there, even if it's the basic production AC-Delco items. I usually look for Borg-Warner Cool Wire spiral core wire sets, pre-terminated and ready to install. The first set I put on was on my '77 Camaro V-8. At that time, they looked just like the factory HEI wires except the boots were about twice the size--same color and everything, but later versions have changed a little. Down here, Pep Boys carries them and the price is competitive with stock wire sets, but they have the spiral core guts like the "high performance" brands that cost more.<P>Enjoy!<BR>NTX5467 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest Posted September 26, 2003 Share Posted September 26, 2003 Having worked for a number of auto parts chains over last 15 years I have noticed that some stores only stock the top x number of fast moving parts. It would be nice to carry everything for everybody but then the store would be almost as big as Texas. If you live in a market where the correct Buick 455 wires are not available I have substituted Chevy 454 wires many times and found that there are a couple wires that are a bit longer than needed but at least you can use them. if the wires were too short... This is probably why the auto parts stores do this.(one part covers more applications so why stock the other part #'s) the only problem with this is the inexperiencced parts counter guy doesn't know what parts that are not for your car will fit your car. Larry is actually the one who told me about the wires. The wire set is NOT available fromGM dealers,even though the electronic parts catalog and price book shows it isstill a valid part in the GM system. I verified this with a call to GM this morning. The part is still available through AC-DELCO parts stores. IF they do not have it they should be able to order it. They should be able to look it up using the part number I gave earlier, or go by application. I am unable to getthe "short" (AC-DELCO) part number in my electronic catalog's chart, or I would give that to you also.Sorry for the mis-information. NTX5467 Posted October 23, 2003 Share Posted October 23, 2003 Did you check for Borg-Warner Select series magnetic suppression wire sets for OEM applications? Used to be the old KoolWire and KoolWireII nomenclature, I believe. Don't know why ACDelco might not have a wire set for that application either.
