Purpose of a gas pedal rheostat on a 71 Buick?

Hey! I'm neck deep in the new (to me) wiring harness for my car, and I've got a lot of loose ends.

There seems to be a rheostat on the gas pedal with a two prong male plug. I have no idea what would connect there.

Why would there be an electronic component running to the gas pedal? My first thought was kickdown switch, but I've been told that the throttle linkage for those was usually at the transmission.

Thanks, I hope that's clear.

This isn't my picture, but it shows what I'm talking about. There's a mechanical lever driving an electronic "switch."

Kick down switch...all th400 equipped cars had them

Okay thanks, I thought it might be a kickdown switch but I needed to confirm that after everyone conspired to convince me otherwise.
