1972 Buick Skylark worth the buy? Need some advise.

Hi,

I'm new and would like some advise on purchasing a 1972 Buick Skylark. This would be my first classic restoration, and well just need some advise on whether this is a good buy or to run. I'm currently deployed in overseas and I'm unable to get a good look at the car. I have always wanted this year and make so am trying to have my wife buy if its a great buy.

What I know about the Vic. is 1972 Buick Skylark,350, automatic, runs good(could use tune up,been sitting for 16+ years), has GS hood,about 300 miles on rebuilt transmission, interior is all there but needs put back together, Body straight,has mag rims.

The sellers asking 2700.

The GM A-body cars from 1968-72 are excellent first restoration projects. Even the non-Chevy versions are well supported with aftermarket and reproduction parts. They are easy to work on and there is a tremendous amount of literature available to support a restoration. All the A-body cars also have a large following on-line, so it is easy to find a forum that can supply information. The only issue is body rust. In particular, look for rust under the stainless trim around the windshield and back window. This pinchweld rust is common due to trapped debris and moisture. Proper repair requires weldiing in new metal, which means removing the interior and headliner to avoid fires. This can get expensive if you are paying someone to do it. Look carefully for signs of water leakage at the base of the windshield and rear package shelf. This nearly always is a sign of pinchweld rust on these cars (despite the fact that sellers often try to say it's just the window that needs to be resealed). Good luck.
