Not sure what it is called , but the fiberboard that is found lining inside the firewall , sides on driver and passenger side, between back seat and rear window and trunk.

My question is - are replacements available and where, or do I have to try and make some? Of course replacing with carpeting would be easier, but I would prefer something more original.

Oh, I hve a 47 4 door Buick super 8.

The part you are speaking of is called the firewall insulator. Someone from the Buick camp will have to chime in about availability as all my projects are Fords. Usually there will be some insulating material on the side facing the engine to help control heat and noise.

Upholstery supply outlets have thick black cardboard. It is normally used for the backs of sofas and the like. But it also makes good door panels package shelves and possibly firewall insulation if you add some padding on the back.
