Guest pssmls
Can someone tell me what size and type of set screw should be used to attach the horn button into the steering column throttle/spark housing? It appears that maybe it should have a small conical shaped head on it so the interior small plate of the horn button that the screw goes into, will tighten up against the copper housing of the the horn button so as to make an electrical contact. If anyone has any information on this or knows what I need, would you please be so kind as to respond? I have a horn button but not a set screw. Thank you. unimogjohn
Here you go, but do not remember the size. But it is small and not very long. A good mom and pop hardward store should have them also. And yes, it does have a cup or conical end. McMaster-Carr
Guest pssmls
To: Imported_1922 Buick 33-6-49I wish I had that book. Thank you for your help. Do you happen to know the length and the number of threads per inch? Maybe the No.4 x 3/8" indicates that. I have been to the hardware store twice, the last time with my horn button, & the clerk and I were not able to determine the correct screw for the horn button. The clerk said that we need to know 3 things: the length, the size, and the number of threads per inch, in order to match up the correct screw. It's good to know that it is a flat head screw. I thought it should be a flat or cone shapped head based on the configuration of the hole in the horn button housingPaul Searcy
trp3141592
Hi,#6-32 screws (standard size 6, 32 threads per inch) are common and are readily available at any hardware store, Lowes, TSC, etc. Flat head screws have a taper/conical section between the screw slot and the thread. You can order a pack of 100 for a whopping $1.72 at mcmaster.com, part number 90275A146. It' steel and may rust in place over the years, so I suggest you install it with a teenie-toothpick-tip dab of Never-Seize so you can easily remove it 10 years from now.If it turns out to be a #4 screw, McMaster has those also. #4 screws come in a variety of tpi's, but the most common is 40 threads per inch. These packages of screws are cheap and two will cost the same in shipping as one, so what the heck, order both. While you're about it, order up a small stock of nuts and washers. Put the leftovers in your carefully-sorted collection of screws, nuts, and washers.--Tomhttp://s595.photobucket.com/albums/tt36/trp3141592/?action=view¤t=flatheadscrew.gif" target="_blank"> Edited July 10, 2010 by trp3141592 (see edit history)
jbbuick22
Paul, The screw for the horn is a set screw just like the one that holds the lever to the shaft. McMaster-carr has the 3-32 set screws but they are an allen head, you can make one buy geting a set screw longer and cutting off the allen end and cutting a slot. I have copies of the 21, 22, and 23 parts manuals. If you want one I can have a copy made. JB22-6-55 Sport Touring
Guest pssmls
John, Thank you very much. I would like that. Can you send them as an enclosure with a message? If not, just mail them and I will reimbursement you the cost of copying and postage. Thank you also for the information on the horn button screw. I believe you have my email and snail mail addresses. If not, emal me and I will forward my mailing address.Paul Searcypss_mls@yahoo.com
jbbuick22
Paul, I when mentioned the set screw I guess I was thinking of the lever screw, which I think is #12. The horn button screw is a flat head or a flatundercut and is a #4 or a #6. I will check my car for the correct size. I will have a copy of the 23 parts manual printed and send it to you. jbbuick22
Paul, The screw size is #4-36x 3/8 long flatheat slotted. An unusual size, but is available, Fastener Mart has then in a box of 100, and Brasseur Electric Trains has them .25 $ each. JB
