Guest xtgold
I have a rusty metz engine I bought in 1977 and has been buried in storage ever since.I may try to get at it this weekend to get the number off it.When I bought it the guy said it was used as a stationary engine in the 1960's and it looked pretty complete.Aluminum? oilpan which I found odd for that vintage.I still have the scar on my hand where a broken sparkplug bit me while loading onto the truck.Located in conn.(home of ESPN)
MochetVelo
The one sold at Hershey last year was also used as a stationary engine. They are pretty dependable. I assume your's is a 4-cylinder design. If it has an electric starter (or bracket for a starter), it's probably a type "25". If just a magneto, it's a "22" (pre-1915). The numbers stand for the HP. Not sure where the extra three HP came from.Phil
Guest xtgold
It's a 4cyl but I forgot the details,I will have to look at it to refresh my memory.I saw a picture of an engine with a chain drive generator? in front.I don't think mine has that.I am pretty sure it has a magneto. Guest xtgold
I should see it tomorrow, assuming we don't get hammered by a blizzard.
Guest xtgold
36755 is the engine number. It has no starter, generator or flywheel. The carburetor bowl has rotted off.It is not frozen,I overloaded it with oil when I put it in storage in 1977.I turned it over with a tire iron to make sure it wasn't frozen.I can see the side valve springs/valves, cover missing?Looks like fahnestock clips on the magneto for the missing sparkplug wires. MochetVelo
According to Franklin Tucker's article in Antique Automobile, your engine dates from early 1916 and is from a Model 25. It should have had an electric starter, I think, as these were added by 1915. Is the Metz name cast into the head? It is on my 1913 engine. Guest xtgold
It had a spot for a chain driven generator? and a spot for a starter, but both of those are missing. It has the name metz and waltham mass.cast into the head.
MochetVelo
That confirms it as a Model 25 (ie; 25hp) Metz engine.Phil
Guest xtgold
I can see the exposed valves on the side, was there a side plate that is missing?
MochetVelo
There should be a cover plate over the valves, but it's a simple piece of sheet metal.Phil
Guest xtgold
The sheet metal plate must have rotted off.
