Guest washburn
Hello,A friend has a 40 Ford V8, we got the engine out on Saturday. Now we need to take the starter off. Neither of us our Ford guys, and my old Motor, Chiltens, and National manuals are no help on explaining the removal of this starter. Can someone help me out? Thanks.John WashburnElizabeth, Colorado
Guest Bob Call
This is so simple that you will not find it in the manuals. The starter is attached to the right side of the lower bellhousing which is part of the oil pan. It has two cap screws attaching it to the oil pan. Looking at the front end of the starter the screws are at 8 o'clock and 2 o'clock. There is a crescent shaped box end wrench which used to be available from most tool sources called a "Ford starter wrench". It was to make getting to the 2 o'clock position screw easier. You may be able to use a universal joint 3/8 drive socket and extension. If not, a slow process with a straight end wrench.
Guest Bob Call
There is a Craftsman starter/manifold wrench on ebay right now. No bid yet and $3.95 starting price. Good buy for a Craftsman wrench which has a lifetime warranty. New at Sears is $16.99.ebay link: Craftsman V Starter & Manifold Wrench 9/16 - 5/8 :eBay Motors (item 160365522768 end time Oct-04-09 08:00:38 PDT)Sears link: Sears.com

Guest washburn
Folks,Thanks for all the kind help.Nope not from Rhode Island, Italian grandfather, working for GM in London, got the Washburn name out of a phone book. Got to Canada then the US that way.Now to the 40 Ford, there was one bracket to the pan, at the rear of the starter. No other bracket. The ticket was to take both long bolts, on rear of starter loose, then starter came right out. Only caution was to make sure the bolts don't come out, or one, with no experience, will have trouble putting the humpty dumty starter back togeter. So we just attached nuts at the ends to hold it all together. Thanks John Washburn
