  1. im looking for a set of the ribbed door panel chrome backings that go in between the door panel, and the arm rest and the long chrome strip on the trunk that has "oldsmobile" on it (plus the 2 small parts of same trim that attach to quarters) please email if you have either thanks Mike

If the gauge reads empty all the time the ground wire is broken or corroded, causeing an open circut. </div></div> This is a bit incorrect (at least for a 1968, and the 70 should be the same) i believe you have it backwards, a dead short should produce an empty reading do this flip down your rear liscense plate door and you should see a brown wire going above the gas tank. pop your trunk open and find where this wire goes through the grommet. There should be a black plastic clip right before it goes through the grommet - seperate this clip take the clip that goes to the front of the car and insert a stripped copper jumper wire into it, and attach the other end to a known good ground and have someone hold it on the good ground (or run it to the batteries negative terminal) turn your ignition to on (not start) and you should see your gas guage move to the empty part of the gauge - it should be almost exactly on empty - if you see this, then that means the wire running from the trunk to your gas gauge is good, and the actual gauge is good. now, unplug your jumper wire, and plug the clip back together now, jack the back of the car up and crawl under it - while laying on the ground looking up at the gas tank, look in front of the gas tank for a wire that runs out of the front of the top of the tank that screws to the floor pan just above the axle - on mine, its a 1/4 inch hex head bolt - unscrew this and clean the corrosion off the bolt, the wire stakon connector, and the area on the floor pan that it threads to and reconnect it all creating a solid ground at that point. turn the ignition back to the on position and see if your gas gauge now reads correctly?? If it does read right, you had a bad ground, if it doesnt read right, your sending unit is bad, or going bad, or you have problems with the wire attachments on the sending unit - unfortunately both require dropping the tank to troubleshoot further hopefully this helps Mike
