  1. Mark- It's a new battery, so I will go Leons route.

Leon- Yes, thanks if you have a scanned copy, I would greatly appeciate it!

Leif- Wow again! Great pictures. I will update again next Sunday.

Thanks for everyones insite, with all of your help we will get this old lady running in time for her debut at the Encinitas Christmas Parade this year. (I hope)

  2. Worked on the mechanical starter today. Took everyone's advice and just STOMPED on it. Got movement, and that was all I need to see. The starter, generator is not working yet. i was told that when the ignition is switched on, I should have some noise from it- but nothing yet. That will be next week.

I have ordered a new gasket set for the pan, and will put the pan on, and fill'r with oil when I get it. Then really go to work on trying to get her to turn over.

Took the floor boards out, and took the plate off the starter, looks good down there for an 86 year old car.

That's it for this weekend- spent more time on my '71 Honda 600 Sedan today.

  3. Leif, wow, you have pictures of EVERYTHING! They have been a great help! The crank is definitely not engaging, so something is amiss there. The pin is OK, see my last picture, I am assuming that the engaging nut is broken- your 1st picture. I will look deeper next weekend. When she does actually get to the stage of cranking up, I will have a video ready.

  4. Leif and John, thanks for the insight. I did find the owners manual with reference to the instrument light, should have figured that easy one out. As for the crank, it is definitely not engaging. I pushed, twisted and tried like heck to get it to hook on something, so there something amiss in there. Great advice on the starter, I will keep you posted as to the progress.

  5. Started with the basics yesterday, got the battery charged and went to hook it up. Found a bit of corrosion on the battery cradle, so I cleaned it up, also missing one metal strap. See pictures.

Ah the wonders of Duct Tape. Was wondering how to easily lift the battery in and out of the cradle, so I constructed a lifting strap out of good 'ol duct Tape- see pictures- works great!

Hooked the battery up, and power was good all over. Head lights, tail light and horn work as new. The instrument light works as well- but, how do you shut it off? I don't see a switch for it. See picture #7.

Tried to see if the starter would crank, flipped the switch to ignition, amp meter pegs over to about 15 on the discharge side. Stepped on the starting pedal, lights dim, amps go to zero- and nothing. No crankage. Suggestions?

Went to test the hand crank, and found that it just spins, does not connect to anything, doesn't catch. Doesn't pull out as if the rod is broken, so I would assume that whatever it is to catch on, is broken. Suggestions? See picture.

Poured Marvel Mystery Oil down the cylinders as well- will do so again today.

I will keep you all posted. Dave

  6. Leif- great inspiration on the 25 Buick. Was out tinkering today, found that I need the 6 volt battery charged. Still keeping the cylinder walls lubed while the pan is off. Also, still need to find some kerosene.

John, not sure how many 23-4-39 were produced, but there were so few, that it is not even listed as a regular production car as far as I can tell. I know there are at least 2 others out there though, along with mine.

  7. Leif, thanks for the insite on the parts, Looks to be correct on the footrst bracket according to your picture. I will check them out this weekend.

Howard, never would have thought of muffler shims, thanks.

Great knowledge in this forum, thanks to all. I will be posting more this weekend, as I dig through my stuff.

  8. This was a 1 family owned car, purchased new in 1923 in Zuma Arizona, and driven over the Plank Highway to San diego, where it spent it's entire life. I purchased it from the Grandson of the original owner about 4-5 years ago. He sold it because his wife wanted the garage space for her VW Thing?!! It's been sitting due to other projects. Well, I have "cut some from the herd" and now have the time and resources to restore.

Pretty low mileage original car- original engine and trani.

I will keep the forum posted.

  9. I was reading my "Everyman's Guide to Motor Efficiency- 1922" and it mentioned all that you recommended. Clean with kerosene (I'm a city boy, where the heck does one get kerosene?) Also, yes, I picked up a gallon of Marvel Oil at PepBoys today. I will keep the Forum posted, and am keeping a day to day diary for the Buick Bugle. Stay tuned!

  10. Pulled a lot of parts out of the trunk, and need to identify some.

1st picture- what is the thin threaded cylinder type goodie at the bottom the picture?

2nd picture- looks like a small clamp for something

3rd picture- what is this used for?

4th picture- almost looks like a flat windshield wiper

5th picture- about 2 inches across and 3 inches tall

6th picture- about 3 inches long

    7th picture- ?

  11. I unburied my Buick today and got things in order to begin the process of getting her back on the road. Cleaned out the garage to make room for the new project. Took pictures of EVERYTHING!

Tons of good stuff in the trunk. Dropped the pan, removed the valve cover valves and rockers. Everything looks remarkable well! Did not get around to hooking the battery up today, I will do that next weekend.

Check out the attached pictures, let me know what you think.

I have also posted some pictures on the "What is it?" thread.

    Wish me luck, Dave

  12. Thanks, I purchased the car from the ORIGINAL family owners. Grandpa's car, then son's car, then uncle's car and finally to the grandson, from whom I purchased the car. Very low miles and well taken car of. I got pretty lucky- now just have to get'r running again.

  13. I am charging the'ol 6 volt, and will begin my "tinkerage" this weekend. Stay tuned! Any and all help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

I will be keeping a picture diary, and will submit it to BCA Buick Bugle when complete.
