  4. As a lifelong resident of Stark County, Ohio, where Canton is located, and where I now live, having been born about fifteen miles to the northeast in Alliance, we take pride in our association with professional football, and the Hall Of Fame, which is located in Canton.

I came across these photos from the "Canton, Ohio was a Great Place to Grow Up” Facebook page, that were taken in September, 1966, when the Pro Football Hall Of Fame Parade still went down Fulton Road NW, on its way to the other side of Interstate 77, where the Hall is Located.

In these pictures can be seen actor Pat O'Brien (star of the 1940 movie classic “Knute Rockne, All American”, with Ronald Reagan) who was the Grand Marshall of the parade that year, riding along with Canton Mayor Stanley Cmich in a new 1966 Oldsmobile 98 convertible.   There are a few other pictures where future classics can be seen parked in driveways along the parade route, including a full-size 1962 Oldsmobile, a 1964 Chevy Impala, and a 1965 Chevy Bel Air or Biscayne.

One picture on particular has several pre-war classics rolling down the parade route; I would be curious to know if anyone can please identify them by year and make.

Finally, please do not dock me for the picture of the 1957 Chevy “clown car”; I actually remember this vehicle as a kid, from several years later in the Carnation Parade in Alliance.  It rocked back and forth going down the road, and sounded very loud, with firecrackers and even explosions going off as it went down the street.  Things that I don’t care for now in a classic vehicle, but as an elementary school aged-kid, it was exciting and amusing!

I hope everyone enjoys the vintage photos…

  6. I literally take hundreds of photos each year at Fall Hershey—it provides memories that I can refer back to any time I want.  And I appreciate the postings from others, as it is literally impossible to see everything.

These are just some representative shots, including the drive into town on Chocolate Avenue as I arrive for the week; my friend Paul’s ‘51 Chevy Styline DeLuxe that he successfully sold in the car corral almost immediately, my 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire Coupe on the show field on Friday, and as a metaphor, you literally can find the kitchen sink in the swap meet area!

    Hope you enjoy these!

  7. Regarding “the old football stadium”, and perhaps only tangentially relevant, but from 1951 through 1967, the Philadelphia Eagles held their summer training camps in Hershey, Pennsylvania, as evidenced by old pictures of none other than John Madden, who tried out for the team but was injured and never played for them, and Hall Of Fame quarterback Sonny Jurgensen; both men can be seen with the familiar arches of the Stadium in the background.

I’ve posted a picture of a building that I do not recognize, that must have been associated with the training camp in Hershey; does anyone know the history of the building, at least as far as any association it may have had to the grounds at or near where Fall Hershey is held?

Finally, an interesting (perhaps) bit of trivia; the Washington Redskins held their training camps in the other Pennsylvania Mecca for old car hobbyists, in Carlisle, at Dickinson College, from 1963-1994, and again in 2001-2002.   Jurgensen was traded from the Eagles to the Redskins in 1964, so he would have enjoyed his training camps (if a player can actually “enjoy” them) in both towns.

Finally, most everyone should know that the most famous sporting event  that ever took place at the old Hershey Arena was when basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain scored a record 100 points there in a game in 1962.   Was there ever any activity at the Arena associated with the Fall Hershey Meet at any time in the past?

  8. Well, if my friend’s experience is indicative, he took his car in to the car corral on Tuesday morning and before we could get out of the car, two prospective buyers immediately showed interest, and one of them made the deal and handed over the money within a couple of minutes.  Then he changed his mind because it wasn’t the correct model his friend/client was asking for; however, about an hour later, another buyer paid the asking price without negotiation.   So people were definitely walking around with cash money…

  9. The one thing I always tell people who are contemplating or have made the commitment to attend Fall Hershey for the first time, is the warning that once you’ve been there, you’ll be going back every year!   I attended my first one in 2001, and when I arrived on Friday, there was three inches of rain and a commensurate amount of mud that day, and the car corral that year was at the parking lot of the outlet stores’ plaza.   We were shuttled on school buses packed in as tight as sardines, and there was so much water vapor from the sopping wet clothes everyone had one, the windows on the bus fogged up.

And even with all of that happening, I loved it, and with the exceptions of 2020 and 2016 (when I suffered a leg injury in August and had five months of rehabilitation), I have been back every year since that first one.   And as long as God is willing and the creeks don’t rise, I will be back in Chocolate Town on Monday for the duration.

  10. Steve, thanks for the suggestions.

Bob, I have been to the all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinners at the Hummelstown Fire Department for several years, and I have always enjoyed it.   Having said that, those dinners were always late Friday afternoon/early Friday evening, and this year, with everything being moved one day earlier, that would be the exact time that people would be getting ready for and attending the Awards Banquet at the Hershey Lodge.   I wonder if the Fire Department is aware of this, and if they’d be willing to move it back one evening to Thursday.

  11. As an out-of-towner, some 300+ miles away from Hershey, I would like to once again have the recommendations of locals for any restaurants (especially new ones) to visit for dinner, after a day of walking the miles and miles of the swap meet fields.

Of course, recommendations from Hershey Meet regulars who want to chime in with their good places to go are appreciated as well.

Finally, and I don’t know if this warrants another topic, but if locals could post if there are any construction concerns in the area, let us know as well.

    Thanks!

  12. Don’t want to steal the thunder of our original poster for this, but I saw that we are now only one month away as of now!

Needless to say, I am a fan of this—so much so, that I suggest we have a garage cam with a continuous running tally of the Countdown To Hershey!

  13. I have registered my 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire Coupe once again for the car show, and plan to be there first thing in the morning on Friday (not Saturday!).  Prior to that, I look forward to walking most if not all of the swap meet starting on Tuesday morning through Thursday afternoon.   In the meantime, I will count the days in eager anticipation of attending the greatest classic automobile event on the planet (and, famous last words, to try to get in shape to do so between now and then!)…
