  1. The lifelong collections of longtime AACA Members Remy and Betty Baker are being auctioned this weekend in Liberty, SC, between Atlanta & Charlotte off I-85.

The SC and NC AACA regions and many other clubs have been visiting this legendary collection, 67 years in the making, housed in an old schoolhouse, for decades.

There are brass cars, parts, some fine touring cars, all pre-war, plus enough collectibles, furniture and stuff to fill many man and woman caves.

These two Hupps are a couple of the more interesting cars in the auction. I just learned of this sale, and am sharing the info on behalf of my dear friend Betty. Remy passed away last July. Preston Opportunities is handling the auction.

This 1921 Model Four Roadster and '23 3-Passenger Coupe are two of the cars in the auction. The '48 Jeepster has turquoise and white upholstery. An important car in the auction is this 1902 CDO that participated in Detroit's Golden Jubilee in 1946, still owned by the same family. I just learned of this sale, and am sharing the info on behalf of my dear friend Betty. Remy passed away last July. Preston Opportunities is handling the auction.

From the Baker Auction catalog. The lower left photo is likely from the Detroit 100 Centennial in 1996, not the Golden Jubilee (shown at right).

She fired up in about 40 minutes after a long slumber!

Experts say it's a #4 car, in decent overall shape. The incorrect wheels/tires should be an easy fix.

I'll be on hand from Thurs. through Sat. to answer any questions about this historic automobile.

  8. Anyone remember Hasbro's "Amaze-A-Matics" cars that included a chunky version of the '69 Century Cruiser? I got the Buick for Christmas back then, wrecked it, and have a beater replacement for it in the office (collecting dust). The programmable cards were supposed to replicate famous tracks like LeMans, Riverside, etc.

You don't see that Century Cruiser very much, so it's cool to see it included in the list.

  9. For years little was really known about the Cadillac, and much was learned about it following Morgan Murphy's discovery and purchase, through his exhaustive research. Our reference books are great, but some contain misattributions, corrected with new info that's been learned after their publication. A great source of info on many of the custom Cadillacs through the years is the ever-changing Cadillac Database. (Scroll down to find the '41's, including The Duchess). And you're right, it's a great thing that Earl liked Buicks (a lot); for '42 they offered an amazing range of models...

  10. That particular 1941 Cadillac built by Coachcraft Ltd....

The "Duchess" was a complete Fleetwood build, not Coachcraft, whose creation was heavily photo-documented by Fleetwood (GM in-house) and the Styling Section. The GM Heritage Center provided her owner with the build photos of the car in the studio, and at the time of her delivery in Manhattan.

The only production cars to use Air Foil styling were 1942 Buick Roadmaster sedanet and convertible, and Super sedanet and convertible. This body style lasted thru 1948 in Buick only.

Correct for the prewar '42's, but the '46-'48 Super and Roadmaster sedans (Models 51, 71) and Estate Wagons ('46-'48 Super Model 59, '47-'48 Roadie Model 79) also used the flow-through fender/door treatment.

    42_super_51x.jpg

Larger, a '42 Super formerly from the Lewis Jenkins Collection.

    46_connie_47_buick_48_fltwd_adj_558764.jpg

Larger, a '47 Roadmaster and '48 Fleetwood with the MATS Constellation in the late-'90's in Greenville, SC.

I attended the auction, and must eat crow for my my high bid expectations posted above. The "Duchess" is stunning to behold in person with an almost-sinister beauty, and was a style-leader well past the end of WWII. By adding 10 inches to a Series 62 chassis, the rear door openings did not become part of the rear fender as on the '42 & '47 Buick sedans seen above.
