  1. does it matter if you just leave it engaged all the time?
  2. Thats just it, when driving it is not 40pds. To be excact it is probably around 31 or 32 pds. Can I pull out the OD while driving or do I need to do it when it is sitting still? I mean I want to disengage the OD while not driving on the highway.
  3. O.K. I got the manual out again and it actually says 40 pds. at driving speed and it doesn't say anything about idle. I guess my brain just created that idle thing. When I am driving it is around 30-35, I guess that is pretty good, huh? Maybe not enough to worry about?
  4. the manual says it should attain 40 pds. at idle and 40-50 at speed.
  5. Well, I got her out and drove around the neighborhood about 10 minutes today. While at idle after warming up it reads about 25 pds. oil pressure and at driving speeds about 30. The needle gauge just touches the edge of the 4 on the 40 at higher speeds. On another note, this Packard has overdrive. I haven't even messed with this because I have not had it on the highway yet. Is it engaged with it pushed in or pulled out?
  6. what is the best way to jack up the engine without doing any damage to it?
  7. It is inside that round cylinder that is sticking down at an angle with the large hex bolt on the end. You might not can tell by the pic but it is only about a 1/2 inch from the front frame member making it extremely difficult to remove. The 3 smaller bolts you see and 1 you don't see are holding the oil pump on to the engine.
  8. here's a picture of the external oil pump
  9. I have been advised by a man with a lot of Packard knowledge that sometimes the valve spring can be fatiqued and not operated properly. This can sometimes be fixed by shiming it with a thin spacer, like a washer or thin dime. If pressure raises too high thin spacer is too thick. I would rather try this first without removing the entire oil pump. I will post a pic to show the pump.
  10. The oil pump relief valve hex bolt is at an angle where it faces the front part of the frame and is only about a 1/2 inch from touching it. Anyway, I simply can't get anything to get it off and if I do I don't think it would come all the way out because it would hit the frame. Frustrating!
  11. if i remove the big hex bolt to look @ the relief valve spring in the oil pump, is oil oing to pour out everywhere? it's a '49 288 thanks!

    wheel lugs

Lets take it one more step on the wheel lugs. Seems simple but I have heard more than one or two different ways. With wheel off ground I get lugs good and snug then drop jack and tighten.

    wheel lugs

There is a Harbor Freight retail store close to me and I am heading that way within a few days. I do know that if I ask 30 different people aboout brands of torque wrenches I will get 30 different opinions. Been there and done that.

    wheel lugs

was looking at my manual and it says 85-95 pds. torque for wheel lugs. I don't have torque wrench. How many of you guys actually use a torque wrench for wheel lugs or other things.

    49 oil pump

I have been told by experienced Packard person that I can check the relief valve wothout removing oil pump. There is a spring in this valve that if fatigued enough will open prematurely and drop the pressure. Was told also you can't get new springs for this but can place small shim or thin washer or even thin dime behind spring. If this improves oil pressure then that was obviously problem. If pressure is too high then you have too much washer behind the spring. If no change at all pull valve covers check engine for sludge and keep trouble shooting from there.

    49 oil pump

I need to check my relief valve spring in my oil pump on my 49 288. It sure doesn't look easy to get to. Any tricks you guy know?

    jack stands

Also, will it hurt to leave the car up on the stands for awhile?

    jack stands

I am not going to be under the the car for this that is why the wheel is off so it is easy access. I am also going to check oil relief valve spring. For oil pan removal I have the tires about 15 inches off the ground at the bottom of tire. I don't use a creeper, never have, I just move around under there.

    jack stands

It is a level concrete floor and I am gong to take off inner fender cover to get to valve cover to remove and look in to check for gook, sludge, etc. I have made some homemade lifts for oil pan removal and will show at later date. Check out this pic and see what you think? The farther back stand is slightly back from where X meets sdie rail and front is about where it meets. The wood blocks are there for obvious reasons but I probably should get something bigger.

    jack stands

I should say inner fender cover. It is a 49 Deluxe 8. Lower A frame is where the X meets the outside frame? Can you tell I haven't done this much? I am going to be working with hands and arms over front wheel and under the right front fender so I want it to be safe.

    jack stands

I just moved it back some and put another one where the first one was. If you move it up where the V is it is still sloping upward you just can't tell by the photo. I am going to take off inside fender guard and valve cover and check engine for gook, sludge, etc. Is there a better place to place jack stand up front?
  23. Hey John I have an idea, just keep your info and be happy with it. All the best.

    jack stands

i never feel that the jack stand is in the right place - does this look OK?
  25. need to pop off the Packard wheel covers and remove front wheels. Don't have a special rubber tool for this as not to scratch it up. Any homemade rmemdies for this?
