  1. Hudsy, attached is the car you must have been looking at and again, close but not a match to my eye.

Look at the distance between the lower corner of the trunk lid and the side of the body, plus that crisp line on the edge of the unknown's turtledeck is almost horizontal when it joins the main part of the body. And no curved corner at the bottom rear corner of the curved window on the Stude.

  2. Trimacar,

I was looking later in time than late teens, but have now checked 1918-19 Cadillacs 'victoria coupes' and close, but no cigar. More traditional rounded turtledeck edges and square lower rear corners in the side windows.

Good guess and thanks for pointing me earlier.

  3. Not my pic, but I've been trying to ID the make of the bodies in this factory scene.

Seem to be opera coupes, with large, very square side and rear windows. The 'turtledeck" is pretty distinctive, with a rather crisp outer edge and a trunk opening that comes close to it at the lower corners. Suspect the transition from the crisp edge to the smooth side would take some handwork, as the worker in the foreground is doing.

    Anyone recognize these?

  4. A dear friend of mine and his wife are trying to re-establish contact with former 'Hemmings' and 'Special Interest Autos' editor Dave Brownell and/or his wife Marian Savage and are having no luck. Previous contact info at hand doesn't work now. We've checked in with former employers and business partners, and searched social media to no avail. We know Dave had significant heath issues and that's part of the concern.

Does anyone have contact info for Dave or Marian?

Prefer any replies to be sent via PM or by direct email to greg@slotblog.net. TIA for any assistance you can provide.

  5. The folks here are as deep and broad in motor vehicle knowledge as anywhere, so here's a challenge.

What is this partial and deteriorated motor? I have no clue... though I don't believe it is an Ariel square-four from a motorcycle.

    Anyone recognize it?

  6. Correct again, sir. Nice to see it has been restored to better condition.

Locomobiles were extremely well-built cars. Doesn't surprise me that a lot have survived, but they didn't make very many of them as you know.

  7. I think you've nailed it. Thank you.

Different front bumper and taillight, but everything else matches up: the hubcaps and wheels, the door hinge arrangement, the windshield split, the fenders, even the headlamps. And the complicated splash shields.

    Bravo!

  8. You're probably right, on reflection. Maybe as late as late teens or early '20s?

Three-quarter rear elliptic springs also says earlier than mid-'20s, as does the steering wheel set-up.

The hubcaps seem unusual  me. Can't recall anything similar.

  9. The local Packard club chapter had their monthly meeting today, including an auction of donated items to benefit the club treasury.

One of the items was this photograph of a town car, taken in poor light from a bad angle. No one could ID the car, not even as a WAG, so I bid on the photo to scan it and place before the assembled experts here.

I've tweaked the photo to bring out as much detail as possible, but it isn't much.

    Salient features:

    - Twelve spoke artillery wheels, with through-the-spoke bolts at the rear probably attaching to the brake drum.

    - Three-quarter elliptic rear springs.

    - An unusual hubcap design.

    - Normal front door hinging with suicide rear door hinging.

    - Left hand drive

    - Unequally split windshield (2/3 top-1/3 lower) with the lower portion open.

    - Dual splash shield access doors with a knob of some kind after the the rearmost door.

    - An unusual B-pllar in black rather than body color.

    - Unusually large drum headlights, based on the portion of the LH lamp that can be seen.

Fender design edging suggests 1925-28 timeframe for the vehicle to me, as do the steering wheel mounted controls.

    Any ideas, gentlemen?

  10. By the way, after I wrote I saw something about the advanced uploader requiring Flash 9. Flash of any version, however, is a huge security problem and is being discontinued in favor of HTML5 and other technologies so you might want to see if steering away from it is an option. I've known this for years but in the last few weeks it's been all over the Internet as the end is very near now so I'm surprised this latest version of the forum software is using it in any form.

Well, first of all, The AACA forum is not yet using the very latest version of IP.Board, nor am I at my hobby forum. Version 4 of IP.Board was officially released a month or so ago, after a three+ year development and beta process. Many users of IP.Board are waiting before upgrading, for reasons I likely don't have to mention to an experienced guy like yourself.

Whether version 4 has ditched the use of Flash for the advanced uploader, I do not know.

I can say that the advanced uploader works very well. As to the vulnerabilities Flash might have, I've not seen any issues on my end, but then I use the Apple platform exclusively and have since 1991. None of my forum's users have reported any problems with Flash to me.

I would like to point out the vBulletin, the forum software formerly used here, has experienced a recent issue with hackers being able to break into its PM system to spam the membership. I know of two forums who have been dealing with this and reports are there are many others.

So far, IP.Board has not suffered similar issues to the best of my knowledge. IPS, who market the software, are extremely vigilant regarding vulnerabilities in their product, based on almost a decade of using it.

  11. I originally posted this plea in the General Discussion forum but am re-posting it here.

This is a serious long-shot, but it doesn't hurt to try...

The Hilton Head Concours d'Elegance, now in its 14th year, is presenting a special class at their event on Nov 1 and a friend of mine is in charge of it.

The class is Chrysler-powered non-Chrysler cars.

They have lined up several, a Chrysler-engined Allard for example, and are looking for other Chrysler-powered entries, specifically:

    Jensen Interceptor
    Monteverdi
Cunningham (Briggs, not classic of course)

    Chrysler-engined Bristol

I should also point out that Chrysler is the featured marque at the concours this year.

This is a very high-end concours d'elegance in a wonderful venue near Savannah, GA. Anyone bringing their car for this class will receive tickets and other perks.

If you know anyone within reasonable distance who owns one of these makes, please connect me with them.

    Thank you for your time.

  12. Don,

There is no such setting as far as I know, either at the user level or the admin level.

My suggestions are to switch to a different browser, i.e. if you're using Internet Explorer, try Chrome or Firefox. Or enlarge your standard view via zooming in. The difference between bold and non-bold may be more discernable at a larger view setting.

  13. mdh7475,

The "Junior" member title was almost certainly part of the default IP.Board member titles/ranks table, which has been updated but the software doesn't revise the member title previously applied to your account.

Here's what Peter has amended it to:

Once you reach the 100 post level, your member title should increment to "Senior Member" according to IPS Support.
