  1. For anyone interested in a simple disc brake conversion for thier 50s era Packard check out this web site. He is in Oregon and will be happy to work with you on any disc brake swap, he is currantly working on parts for early to late 50s packards and all ready has them for the studapackards. He is very nice guy to talk to and will return your call and answer any questions you might have.

  2. Just want to check and see how much of an interest there would be in a direct bolt on disc brake swap. I have delt with a few companies for my lincoln and a few other cars I have and im sure they would make the parts if there was enough interest. I am working on the swap for 40 and 41 models as they use the same spindle and I belive the same spindle was used til 48 on jr and Sr cars.

If you are interested let me know with a post here. The basic kit for the lincoln runs 125 for the caliper bracket spindle spacer and the longer bolts to hold it together. or its 525 for everything. Im sure they could come in about the same price for the packards. You still use your stock spindle, but have to make new lines a different MC, a porportioning valve, and on some cars you might have to get different rims to clear the claliper. also depending on the MC you get you might want to add a set of residual pressure valves due to the MC sitting lower than the brakes, I use a 10# for the rear and a 2# for the front.

  3. The only mods I would ever do to a classic are ones that could be reversed without knowing they were done, when you start subframing for better suspension you might as well drop in a small block chevy. I think Packard did a great job designing the suspension on all thier cars, out of the 28 antique and classic cars we have in the family the Packards are my favorite cars to drive, next to the 1915 mitchell speedster. the Packards handle better and ride smoother than my old 48 Lincoln convertible coupe. which has disc brakes on the front and seat belts. The Packards will have seat belts after this up coming concourse.

  4. why change the whole front end just for a little safety. the only parts that will be changed are the backing plates, master cylinder and drums for a rotor and cliper adaptor nothing thats going to change the car that couldnt be changed back to original. do you call darrins original or modified?? thats not the way packard sent them out of the factory, so whats the big deal of converting to disc brakes? when was the last time you were at a car show and looked under a car to see if it still had the original brakes on it?? I doubt you ever have unless it was at a concourse and you were a judge. Some people drive thier old cars allot more than just to shows and a little added safety is a good thing compared to bent sheetmetal. Do you have seat belts in your packard? I dont remember Packard ever having seat belts either.

  5. I had problems like you mentioned and had Jake rebuild my dist after I had it set up on my old allen machine, he found nothing wrong but did say some of these dist will change the dwell when installed and that was the case with mine, when installed it would change almost 15 degrees, I spent 2 days with it mounted on the engine with a dwell meter to get it set perfect, after that and finding a bad coil resistor the car runs great and has lots of power. If you attemt this yourself have allot of patience and a good dwell meter and if you can find one, a four sided screwdriver(it has 4 flat tips all at different angles and all at 90 degrees). Good Luck

  6. There was a post a little while ago that had attachments showing the exhaust heater. I have an electric motor that goes to one of these systems that is in very good shape and is still working if your interested. I will take $50 for it.

  7. I was made an offer I couldnt refuse, I am trading my 48 Lincoln conv. coupe for a 40 Packard 180 and a 41 Packard 120 business coupe and a 70 dodge challenger 440 6 pack car. kind of hard to not take this deal when the challenger is worth more than the Lincoln by itself. will post some pics of the cars when I get the deal done.

  8. I spent 4500 on having mine rebuilt with all new parts except water pumps dist, crank and rods which were reconditioned and that was with me pulling and reinstalling it myself, at the price for labor nowdays 10,000 to pull rebuild and install isnt to bad. Collector cars get expensive when you cant do most of the work yourself. My Grandfather was just quoted 3500 to remove repair and replace the vibration dampner on his 40 Packard. I saved him the money and am doing it for him. the grille and radiator cradle have to be removed to get the balancer off this car.

    Good Luck on your project

  9. The hoses can be redone at most napa stores for the price of the hose, Use weatherhead hose, it has a burst strength of 450 psi save your old ends and pess on the weatherhead hose, you can use clamps if you like but if you do use the ones for fuel injection hose, they have rolled edges and wont cut into the hose. Mine cost me 8 bucks for all 3 hoses.

  10. Hydroelectric.com They can get you the new hydralic cylinders but they dont have the springs. the coupe uses the same cylinders as the continential for the front, The 2 door coupes you have to modify a set of front cylinders to work, just need to cut them down a little and grind, file or machine the end to accept the threaded part that pins into the window frame. I did it to my 48 convertable coupe a few years ago. Try Merv Adkins for the springs, the rear springs are a little shorter but a set of fronts will work, the windows will just go down real slow. While you are at it take the hyd pump off and take it apart and clean it to get all the old coagulated brake fluid out of it and either flush all the hyd lines till them come clean or just replace them.

when you install the system use auto trans fluid, that way if you have any leaks it wont eat your paint up and its not hydroscopic so you wont have to worry about rust later on. I think I made drawings or measurements for the rear window cylinders but would have to look for them.
