  1. The 36 Packard I bought has a straight 8 and R11 OD in it and on the head it says 288 327AT Thunderbolt. I have had a couple 48s and 53 Packards and have never seen this on the head. it has always been either 288 or 327.

Currently have a 41 business coupe with the 282 and a 40 180 with the 356. can someone tell me which engine I have?

I should have checked bore and stroke when I had the head off, oh well.

  2. Just got back from taking the Grandkids to disneyland.

I only paid 1200.00 for this Packard. the guy who owned it died and had a 3000 sqft garage full of old cars, I was told about how cheap they were going for and thought it was to good to be true then got a call from a friend and headed over there and picked up this 36 for 1200, I offered him 1500 but then he said he wanted the hood ornament and fender turn signals and he would delived it that same day for 1200, needless to say it now sits in my front yard.Even my wife said good deal. will post some more pics if you guys want to see more??

  3. Im looking for a 120 hood and hinge trim and a rumble seat conversion to replace the trunk lid on a 36 3 window coupe I just bought. or any pictures of the actual working of the rumble seat. would Packard have used the same parts as ford for the rumble seat????

  4. Way ahead of you on getting it running. Had all the gaskets sitting here, so the head has been pulled, no rustin the cylinders, Calif has very low humidity and it was stored inside a 3000 sqft garage. clylinder bores are bright and shiny, pulled oil pan and it was as clean as new, so was the oil, which will be changed when the pan goes back on. all valves move freely. will pull the dist and prime the engine once its back together before I try to start it. Ive only done this about 50 times since I was 14.

This will make a great driver and I will enjoy it as much as my 40 180, and my 41 120 coupe. I love my Packards, The v12lincoln name was what I was resoring when I found this site, 1948 Lincoln conv. coupe, one of 16 Ive found that exsist, great looking car but undependable.

  5. I have a set of newer H-10 plugs that the top does not remove but has a grove in them for the clip they also have the silver base, also have a new set of H-10c plugs, they dont have the removable top either. The H-10 plugs I picked up at an old parts store here in Sacramento about 6 years ago, used them for about 250 miles and pulled them thinking it was a bad plug when it started missing, turned out to be a loose wire connection inside the cap. Try Sacramento Vintage Ford for the H-10c plugs with removable caps, they just might have them.

  6. Took me awhile to talk him down from 1500, He wanted to keep the commerant and the chevy turn signals on the front fenders. I have a new base and commerant sitting in the back room so it wasnt hard to take his offer. My wife even likes it as it looks good sitting next to our 41 5 window coupe.Im just happy she didnt shoot me.

  7. Turns out it was a 36. Car is rust free but did at one time have some bullet holes in the trunk, dash was removed and a piece of oak with newer guages installed. converted to 12 volt at sometime. chrome is all in good shape, great for a driver.it has set inside the barn you see it in for last 15 years from what Ive been told. Has a 52 288 engine that is soaking and getting a few things rebuilt before I try to start it.has a floor shifted overdrive Transmission, the single side mount or tire carrier and 5 brand new 700x15 www tires. master cylinder has been upgraded, no heater, has an old after market casset player. interior is nice. It will make a great daily driver soon. see the pics I posted as it sat when I went to look at it. I only paid 1200 for it and that included delivery. Will be looking for some parts to correct the dash and the hodd and hood trim which was all hand made along with the running board trim which is all aluminum. So if anyone has any 36/37 hoods laying around please let me know.

  8. I have a chance to buy a 37 115c thats in real good shape except for the engine has been changed to a Packard 282 8cyl and the dash has been modified with new aftermarket guages. its rust free runs and stops and everything is still there(hub cap, beauty rings spare and jack, has trippe lights and bumper guards also. What would be a fair price??

  9. I have an old edunds dual intake that Ive had for years, looks brand new and polished, its not for a Packard though, I am having it cut to pit my 41 120 business coupe, the 282 intake I meausred is 8 inchs from outer to inner ports and 8 1/4" on the 2 center ports. This might be a 288 intake also as I didnt make it, I plan on taking my original intake off when I get ready to have the edmunds modified. I have a pic of it but have to figure out how to post it.

  10. an easy fix to vapor lock can be as easy as changing your fuel filter and adding a return line to the filler neck. I learned this from my 70 440 six pack challenger. I was using a regular fuel filter when I rebuilt my engine which was fine till temps got up around 100 and stuck in rush hour traffic here in calif. I looked through the shop manual and found these engines and the Hemis used a vapor recovery fuel filter, about $56 through year one, then I found the same thing from Fram that they used on the early 60s 421 SD pontiacs. they have to be mounted straight up but work great. you just have to make a return line to your tank, I go through the filler neck because its easy to get to. The filter has two outlets one inlet, one outlet goes to the carb the outher goes back to the tank, with an electric fuel pump it will recycle the fuel so it never gets hot, its cheap and easy and if you still have the heat shield over your pump it can be hidden never to be seen.

  11. I built my own 6 volt pos ground alt, cost me about 35 bucks with the kit and an old si10 gm from the junk yard. but if you go to Sacramento Vintage Ford, the sell the alt or a generator that is converted to an alt. and thay have the brackets to mount them also.

  12. I posted what I did to fix my pump along time ago. If you have never taken your pump apart chances are it is plugged with old corroded brake fluid residue that will limit the pressure relife valve. These pumps are real simple to take apart and repair. after you get it cleaned use transmission fluid or cheaper yet use heavy duty hydralic/transmission tractor fluid, you can get 5 gals for 13 bucks and if it leaks or spills it doesnt stain or smell like atf.I get mine from walmart.

If you look for my old post it will be under my old name (pandamarie)

  13. I belive what he is looking for is the 12 volt battery with what looks like a starter relay mounted on it to run everything but the starter on 6 volt, if this is correct there are still a few battery companies that make them, one is optima. a little expensive though, as long as you have a good 6 volt starter and good ignition system just buy a 6 volt optima battery and you wont have any problems.

  14. after working on a friends 49 caddy I had to crawl under the dash to find all the original wiring cut up and replaced with red and green wire(apparently they were saving it for a christmas surprise) anyway, I am in need of a complete wiring harness preferably with newer plastic coated wire instead of cloth.

Anyone here know a manufacturer?? I belive its a model 62.

    Thanks for any help

  15. I am looking for anyone that has done a 12 volt conversion on thier 49 cad to maybe get some pictures of the mounting brackets for the alternator?

A friend just bought a 49 and wants A/C put in it but needs it converted to 12 volt to make the A/C work. I have everything to install it but have to make some low mount Alt brackets so the compressor can sit where the Generator is now. Has anyone here done this on thier 49 Cad??

  16. Still had a bad fuel pump, the rubber was gone from the diaphram and the oil seal was not there. I changed the oil today and it ran out like water and smelled like gas so the pump has been going for awhile. at least its all fixed now, now for the trans in the charger.

  17. I had the fuel pump on my 41 Packard go out a few weeks ago and waited for a long time to get my kit through ups since they like to send things around the USA before getting them to you. anyway after putting it all back together and priming it to get it running to no avail, I shook the car and someone had siphned my tank dry on top of that I blew my transmission in my 69 charger. I think im going to give up for the rest of this month and stay in bed.

  18. Thanks Rolf for the information. I think the freind of mine has made a deal with the owner.

He told me he plans on flying back there to Arkansas and drive it home to Calif.

Hope he makes it. It looks like a nice car and with a little TLC it could be a very nice car.

Thanks again Rolf. You made an old man happy.
