5. Thanks guys yeah i dont think the conversion is east never said that, but in the long run you now have a 3spd trans and i think it would be a little more reliable in the end a little costly up front too,but neverless i think it might be better..Now i always thought and was told if a torque convertor was going or shot the internal parts fins and so forth break up and can go into the trans fluid and I was told this by a trans rebuilder so i think i will have to go the trans route because i dont feel like spending 2500.00 to have it rebuilt when i think the conversion would be a little less i would like a GM trans if possible is there anyone selling a conversion kit for that..???Thanks again on you opinions...and help
6. Well i took down the shield to see if the torque convertor botls were loose or the flex plate was cracked and everything looked good..Then i had a friend take a look at it and he said and we both felt it was internal in the trans..I went to a trans shop and they looked at it and determined that the toque convertor was going and thats what is causing the loud knocking noise..I need some opinions do i rebuild? or do i convert to a chevy trans and where do i get the adaptor kit for this..or Do i go for the gusto and through in a freshly rebuilt 500 cid caddy motor with a th 400 trans...please give me your humble opinions please i am lost now....

10. Thanks clipper47,that would be a rgreat help weird thing is i had a vibration had the driveshaft checked/fixed i heard a rattle type noise a couple weeks ago and now its a big banging noise im wondering if the vibration and this noise are the same i think so and yeas i wish it was something just loose so i can tighten it up and be on my way so any help you can give me would be great THANKS AGAIN...G
11. Thanks How hard is this to do is it a direct conversion everything to complete the job....Does anyone make a GM trans conversion ?
12. Well i have been driving the car lately to local shows i still havent sloved the vibration problem i had. I thought well if i drive it slow and local maybe it will show its cards..Well it sure did last night i went to a show afterwards out to dinner. Came out to go home started the car and OH boy I HEARD A LOUD banging noise coming from the trans area...Weird thing is i put it in drive right away the noise was gone put it in nuetral the noise was there again, Well i thought to myself i better get this home before i cant so i drove it slow and easy it took me a half hour which normally takes me 10 minutes i took all the back roads so if it did break i was on a side road not a highway..Anyway it made it home but when i put it in park the noise was there again...My question is how do i get to see the flexplate or torque convertor, and is it a like a Gm trans or ford, chrysler how does the torque convertor bolt up can the trans come off with out removing the convertor i looked under there today i seen no way to visable look at the flex bolts i need some help here where can i began..And now is it time to do a trans conversion..Can i get a conversion to bolt up a GM trans maybe an overdrive ???I am now really confused what to do...
13. Yeah i was wondering about the car sitting, mine sits alot i mean maybe weeks at a time then i drive it a little then sits again i wonder if im not developing flat spots or something..just seems weird the car sat 2 weeks took it out for a ride no vibration..weird..Its must be one of those self heeling cars...
14. 55PACKARD

Hey guys????

Dumb question does Bias belted tires react different in cooler weather the in warmer??Today i took my car for a quick spin to the store to use it a little i noticed no vibration weird i was wondering if this problem is more so when warm i dont know it seems weird to me....
15. Thanks Randall,I tried to give it that almost late 50's early 60's custom look not to radical but just enough to make it stand out...I think it came out just right...And yes the valance does look good that was my friends idea so he gets all of the credit...If it wasnt for him i might have overdonr the car he really knows what is period..The only thing thats not correct is the console but i needed somewhere for my gauges, i dint feel like taking the stock ones out....I still have the stock hood too, thats another hood i did that to so it can be put back to stock pretty easy..Thanks again for the kinds words....
16. Thanks 52deluxe, It was a friends idea to do that so i cant take all of the credit but i do like the way it looks...Thanks again
17. Thanks Guy, I only did some light custom tricks to make it appear like an early 50's custom...Get ready for this the color's you see are 2 part epoxy primer..one is white the other is a tan it has a slight shine to it almost a satin look, i wanted to give it that ready for paint but dont have the money look that they used in the 50's i think i captured it I HOPE...
18. Well you probably right on the cash outlay but i want to see what happns first with the stock trans..I heard to have them rebuilt they were a little exspensive...i think if i was going to spend 2 to 2500.00 on the rebuild i might want to go ahead and transplant in a 700-R4 i think in the long run it might help out alot of ways..longer life for the engine, not reving it to 2500 or so on the highway with OD it would be more like 1500 so that means less wear and tear on the drivetrain i think???
19. Thanks B.H., well i did sand it down so it had a good chance of sticking..My friend used sandable primer then i wet sanded it and he shot the color..I wanted to give it that floating bumper look to it i guess its custom not stock ..but to let you know something it needed to be rechromed anyway so if i didnt like it there wasnt a big lose anyways...i had to remove it to have it rechromed now the bolts are all loose now...
20. Here are some new pictures of my car on pages 5,6,7 i painted the lower bumper on the front what do you think... http://members.cardomain.com/geespackard
21. Thanks guys..I think i was misunderstood i dont want to hotrod my clipper i just want a little better take off that i thought i would get from the lower gearing from the 700-R4 but thats a good idea about the the 3spd with the OD i didnt hear to much about that i might have to look into that..That might be cool to do the change 1 keeping it period correct plus really having something different then the run of the mill trans..Does anyone know whats involed in doing the swap? and what would the price range be? thanks again...
22. Thanks i sometimes forget im that close to kanter's...I think i would do the 700-R4 trans swap becuase i think it would give me better fuel mileage and i think it would have a little more get up anf go out of the hole with the 3.08 first gear that they have..I would buy a rebuilt 700-R4 from jegs by TCI i had a turbo 350 from them and i love it so much so i just have to find the trans adaptor kit then i'll be set..Oh i forgot to say my vibration seems to be more noticable around 30 to 40 mph when on the gas but you can feel it a little lower and a little higher mph but not as bad.....
23. Thanks for the reply...They make a non lock up convertor for the 700-r4 and make something to elimate the computer too..The tires are new only about 3 to 4 months old yes they are bias belted to keep the correct apperance i think they were balanced correctly..i hope anyways...the noise is sometimes i mean it doesnt make that noise all of the time but yes its at idle not in gear or a load on the trans or car ..I would think an engine bearing noise in a motor would make more noise in gear with a load so i dont think its the motor well i hope not...I think its time for me to get the Allmighty book you speak of How and where do i get this..... Thanks alot for your time.....
24. Well i've been doing alot of thinking since my last outburst i would like to apologize if I affended anyone here...I had the drive shaft well kinda fixed the checked the u-joint and regreased the front truinon and the vibration is a little better oh yeah they rebalanced the drive shaft too...anyway i think the torque convertor is no good i had a friend witch is a mechanic look at it and he think the torque is coming apart i hear a knocking coming from the trans when in park or neutral when i place into drive its quiet as a church mouse ..Plus I heard that if the trans has a funny sound to it like a bad water pump it might be something in the trans itself..My big question is if it was going bad what is the outcome? I guess it will destroy the trans right? Plus is it true someone makes a kit to bolt up a Gm trans like a 350 or even a 7004R OD trans that would be great i did also come to the conclusion that i will be keeping the Packard motor in until it dies then i think i might even rebuild it with all the upgrades that everyone has talked about.I would like to put a 2 4bbl set-up on it if i could find one or maybe someone will figure out to modify a chrysler intake to fit that would be GREAT..well thanks for putting up with me and my outrage i guess i had alot of growing up to do....But now im going to be alot more open minded in keeping the motor in on My PACKARD... Oh yeah i always get asked if i still have that motor in too the people seem to love that it still does....
25. Hey Guy i might jump the gun sometimes, I have no patience anymore as i grow older so i go the easy way out i might look into seeing whats wrong with the car ..I know the vibration is not the drive shaft because i had that re-done they balanced it, new rear joint and checked and regreased the front detroit ball and trunion so its back to the drawing board...And the lifter noise has been better since i disconnected the filter like everyone suggested...Maybe i will do a trans swap i think i would want to go with a GM trans just incase down the road i want to go with a small block chevy i could....Oh yeah the vibration is weird it seems between 30 and 40 mph is the worst...of it
