  1. A 1600 square foot building comprised of just 2 20x40' bays is not really ideal. I have a 20 foot ceiling but unless I put Shelves all the way up that's pretty much waisted space.

    20' ceiling? I'm jealous.

Have you thought of building a loft? Wouldn't necessarily need to be a complete 2nd story but even half or 2/3 size of your floor space would be good for parts storage.

  2. PS - still bummed I missed the Packard Centennial but have participated in Buick's 75th & 100th, Ford's 100th, Cadillac's 100th, Oldsmobile's 75th, 90th & 100th and several events for Chevy's 100th and have enjoyed myself at each.

Even got a call today from the Chevy dealer, I won a crock pot in the drawing at the Centennial Open House last week. Woo hoo! Icing on the cake after participating in one of the two Chevy Centenntial parades @ Dream Cruise in August. Arrived late for breakfast but got in line early for the wonderful lunch in Birmingham.

  3. GM and Cadillac 100th's were pre-bailout, and they still did nothing. It just makes it seem like they don't appreciate their customers that have been giving them business all these years at all.

Cadillac/GM DID do something for Cadillac's centennial; they hosted the Cadillac Club at the brand new Wintergarden in the RenCen one evening during the week of the 2002 Grand National. Not only did they provide the bus transportation to/from the downtown Detroit location but when departing, each couple/participant received a framed (shadow box) commemorative pin collection featuring reproduction lapel pins of wreath/crest/vee insignias through Cadillac's 100 year history.

Additionally Cadillac/GM sponsored (financial donation) to the event itself, the exact dollar amount I don't know but it was significant (five figures). For some reason I want to say that their contribution paid for each attendee to receive a personalized porcelain license plate created by Don Sommer's American Arrow.

Who more than anyone would appreciate the direct contribution and generosity by Cadillac Motor Car Company than devoted vintage & contemporary Cadillac owners?

For those not necessarily located in the Motor City area, you may not be aware of the Big 3's sponsorships and participation in the Woodward Dream Cruise, Meadowbrook/St Johns Concours and many other events celebrating OUR vehicles.

And YES, GM did commemorate their 100th with an event inviting 100s of vintage GM vehicle owners to participate. That day's events started at the GM Tech Center and migrated to the GM Heritage Center later in the afternoon. Included a modest luncheon, some giveaways, it was still a nice event though quite a bit downplayed & low key. A few weeks later while reading one of the books given to the participants, biography of Billy Durant, I mused about reading how GM was built while it was (Oct 2008) experiencing significant financial problems.

On another note, this t-shirt seems pretty appropriate here - just change the words a bit from 'our country' to 'car companies', 'auto museums' and so forth.

  4. Bill Harrah claimed he had provided for his museum to continue and he had not. Apparently LeMay did not make such provisions either.

Really?!?!?! Then please explain the documented 15 MILLION dollar donation of cars and funds from the LeMay family.

America's Car Museum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The new museum is costing $50 to $60 million. Even with an amazing quantity and quality of significant benefactors and donors that's a lot of money to raise. You figure it out.

  5. I have a freind that grew up with the whole family, played in all the building as a kid. Some of the family said that they are sell a lot of the high dollar car to pay wages for the folks setting on the board.Lets just see what happen in a couple yrs.

Nancy LeMay (widow) was quoted as saying something to the effect: 'Harold never met a car he didn't like.'

I toured the facility and grounds in June 2006, there were MANY duplicate vehicles, parts vehicles and some which were just not worthy of exhibiting for a variety of reasons. (other similar make, model, genre already on display, etc). We were even able to venture into the woods (with permission) where other vehicles had been discarded, dumped.

At that time we heard about an annual auction to dispose of some of the excess, duplicate vehicles. We saw some that were destined for that year's sale and although a few caught my eye, nothing that jumped out as being a high dollar specimen. Granted something may have changed in the past 5 years but I would like to see substantiation instead of unfounded rumors. I've been following the Museum Organization and have been very impressed with what they are doing. Hoping to get back out there (2400 miles) when it opens, a few years beyond their initial expectations (2009).

Realistically, what kind and size of museum could be constructed to display 3500 vehicles? The finished building will display anywhere from 250 to 5oo vehicles with storage area for 700 additional. Of these storage area, a quantity of that will be for private owners to pay to house their vehicles providing an income to the Museum.

A lot of this is explained in their FAQ page:

and Milestone Magazine / Annual Report: LeMay Museum > Annual Reports

One of the high dollar cars which I recall was a beautiful Tucker. As far as I know, they still own the car.

  6. I heard that they sold off all the high dollar car to pay the help for all the hard work there doing.

Where did you hear this? Press release, magazine article, news story?

Again, what it from a reputable source or unfounded rumor - friend of a friend told me?

  7. I see that the lemay museum is opening in their new facilities next year. The collection used to have 3500 cars but now it appears there is 600. Did they sell off most of them???

Curious, where you heard this information?

Is it a reputable source or unfounded rumor?

  8. What is your positive alternative? Close roads, Stop Maintenance, Do not plow roads? Fewer people and constant services equals higher fees and taxes? What services are you willing to forgo?

My positive alternative is for the State of Michigan to cut back ineffective and unnecessary programs so that it can operate within financial constraints and not continue to look to its remaining residents for more taxes.

School districts need to be consolidated. Municipalities need to merge and/or consolidate services (police, fire, DPW). Oakland County is a perfect example of way too many separate municipalities - redundant services provided by each. Less communities to deal with will not only save at a local level but State level too.

How many Michigan residents are out of work or took a substantial wage cut? Houses are being foreclosed by the 1000s. Businesses are closing or barely holding their heads above water.

I can't remember the last time I had a raise let alone a bonus. My household income is down, ALL of my expenses are up - utilities, food, gasoline, etc etc.

And when I read the newspaper to hear about the State giving $9.1 million dollar tax breaks to convicted felons to construct sanitation equipment for use in undeveloped countries.... absolutely ridiculous!

I won't even start on the lifetime healthcare and pensions for state politicians.

  9. If you have some mechanical capability, why not try to fix the wiper motor yourself.

Often the problem is in the switch or a bad ground. Another common issue is the 50 year old grease is dried up, hard & impedes movement.

  11. March 2010 News -

House Bill 5897 proposed by Rep Cushingberry was introduced in February 2010. If passed, it would increase the registration fees by 90% on ALL motor vehicles over the next couple years.

Additionally, 'Historical Vehicle' license plates would change from $30 for 10 years to $30 PER YEAR. New 'Authentic Plates' would also be assessed at $30 PER YEAR.

Please read the Detroit News article in the link and contact Rep Cushingberry AND your State Rep to voice your opposition AGAINST this legislation.

A copy of the Proposed Bill is attached, a very interesting and TAXING $$$ read.

  12. The problem isn't the law per se, but the sometimes over zealous enforcement.

Many years ago I had that problem. By chance I ventured to find where the Orderinance Enforcement Officer lived to check out his home and it was only a mile away. Son of a gun if he didn't have several Ordinance violations!!! His boss was interested to hear that information and see the pictures.
