1. alright i got a '53 manual (finally) and the buick parts locating guide.
i can't remember the name of the place nor where i saw it, but i saw a place that sells the brackets for bumpers to attach to the chassis. anybody know of the place or places?
i've looked all through the parts locator and my Hemmings Motor News.
i can't remember! arrrrgh!
thanks!
 2. how about restoring a dash of a '53 super? getting rid of some surface rust and preventing rust from attacking again?
is there a way to remove the dash?
suggestions?
thanks again in advance?
 3. what's good to clean up an old '53 super dash? it's metal and i guess it's chrome on some parts.
any suggestions?
thanks!!
will e.
 4. okay, a few posts back i figured out that i was indeed REMOVING the undercoating which what i thought was just a bunch of gunk and grime. (i know, i know, i'm still new at this!)
so my question is this:
do i go ahead and remove all of the undercoating on all of the panels or should i just recoat what i just scraped off on the one quarter panel?
any suggestions?
thanks!
will e.
 5. okay. so i just take a part EVERYTHING and just send it in rusty and chipping.
okay. my next question is. do you guys happen to know of any reputable platers in my area (charleston, sc) i didn't see any in Hemmings Motor News close enough for me to go check out.
also, i know this is expensive, but does anybody have a ball park figure for say a front bumpter and grille (not show quality - i want this to be a daily driver)
thanks!!!
will e.
thanks ralee for the welcome!
i'm enjoying every minute on here and out in the car port with my car!
hey awbe,
no worries. i understand. i mean, i don't have kids, but if my parents came to visit me i would like to spend as much time as i could with them.
[ 05-11-2002: Message edited by: willbilly53 ]
 6. "It is apparrent to me that AWBE is getting his $85 worth of satisfaction by his complaint he registered here."
as john tuttorro says in 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' "That don't make no sense at all!"
in no way has awbe been credited his $85.
maybe from this post some people will choose not to buy from buick world, in a sense maybe they LOST $85, but in no way has awbe been credited. as i see all Awbe is doing is making his experience with these people known to warn other buick enthusiasts.
i'm not trying to continue an argument, i just would like to put my 2 centsin.
i have to agree with john and yellowlark.
i'm fairly a newbie, but i find it very inappropriate to insenuate that awbe is not telling the truth. like john said, there really is no reason for awbe to lie.
if buickworld are such buick parts dealers it should be a given that they would register to this forum from day one. (and other buick forums for that matter) then they could respond to awbe and what not. that right there doesn't make much sense to me.
and to charge someone's credit card before they ship is very unprofessional, especially if they won't credit the person's account upon the arrival of the core. it as easy to credit a card as it is to charge it. it's not rocket science and does not take any longer in terms of the amount of time.
i work in a high-end stereo shop and we charge the very day we ship - period. not before, not after. and when we get a return. we type in the numbers for the credit as soon as we receive the undamaged item.
on that note, this could be one unfortunate incident that has turned for the worse for both Awbe and Buick World, but his post isn't the first complaint i've seen here about Buick World from other users.
just my humble opinion.
-will
 7. alright,
i want to send some trim pieces, hood ornament, bumpers, and other stuff out to be rechromed.
how should i prepare these pieces?
do i sand down to bare metal?
it looks as thought the previous owner had sprayed that chrome spray paint on them and the paint has started chipping and stuff. and there's also little bits of surface rust.

thanks!
 8. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1826187267

she is smokin'!
 9. so i just send it out like it is? rusty and chipping and all?
what about things like grille teeth?
there seems to be unchromed piece under them. will they remove the rust on those as well?
 10. how do you remove a tire from a wheel?
my wheels are rusty and i would like to clean them and paint them as well.

thanks in advance,
will e,
 11. CRAP! so i've been chiseling away the undercoating for the past month!
it looks so uneven and chunky. it's supposed to look like that?
i mean thanks for the info.
oh man! that sucks.
(please excuse my language)
uhm, oh yeah,
cool, you're in charleston!
i'm over in west ashley. off of orange grove road. if you have time give me a call!
i'll be working on her tonight after i get off work.
843-571-3605 i leave the cordless out in the garage with me so i can here the phone ring
how long are you i town for?
[ 05-03-2002: Message edited by: willbilly53 ]
 12. i was just wondering what the consistency of undercoating is? is it more like shiny paint or is more of like kind of matte?
my problem is i've been chiseling away what i think is 50 years of gunk/dirt (i had a post on here a while back about it)from my chassis and quarter panels. and underneath is a fairly shiny, well i guess more of a satin black finish.
so i thought this (the satin finish) was the undercoating.
but then i bought some undercoating to apply on the underside of my hood and it vaguely resembles the gunky stuff that i've been chiseling at for the past month. have i been removing the undercoat on the chassis and quarter panels?
can anyone help me?
thanks in advance,
will
 13. hello all!
got a quick question:
will a '53 roadmaster fuel tank fit a '53 super 56r?

thanks!
and thanks tom and tom!
-will e.
 14. i'm trying to remove the rear quarter panels on my '53 super 56r and i've run into a problem with the 3 bolts on the underside on the bottom of the panel. the bolts are rusted completely along with the underside of the panel. i've tried PB blaster, heat and all that. they will not budge. should i cut the bolts or the panel?

thanks,
will e.
 15. ken,
i've got a '53 super 56r and i've got the same exact problem. I agree PB Blaster is the best of all the penetrating oils. Although i've yet to get my exhaust manifold off. I've tried heat but to no avail. someone said you need to get the bolts glowing when you apply heat. i've yet to do that with my little propane torch.
if you find something that works, please post it, and if i find out something as well i'll post it on this thread. good luck!
will e.
 16. thanks a billion everybody!
sorry i haven't replied or posted in a while, i've had some unfortunate personal business to attend.
luckily, working on the buick will be my therapy.
-will e.
 17. hey thanks y'all,
i've pulled the gas tank already. and flushed it out. and then i took it to a radiator place to get it boiled and they washed it out and flushed it (i guess with just water) and then i saw all the posts about just buying one of the repair kits. so i told the guy i was just gonna pick it up and not have it boiled out. the thing that's weird is i do NOT remember seeing that hole there before i dropped it off. but anyways not really important. the hole is there.
if i flush it out with a hose, do ya'll think it be safe to weld that patch?
also, all i have is one of those small AC100 electric welders from Eastwood. I plan on getting one of those Gas kits from Home Depot for about $279 - will that work? are those pretty good?
thanks again,
will e.
 18. DO NOT USE ABLE AUTO TRANSPORT. THEY COMPLETELY SUCK. I USED THEM FOR MY '53 BUICK. THEY KEPT CHANGING THE DATE THEY WERE GONNA HAVE IT PICKED UP. IT TOOK ABOUT 3 MONTHS FOR MY CAR IN ORLANDO, FL. TO FINALLY GET HERE (CHARLESTON, SC).
just my experience,
will e.
p.s. later i found they were a broker, so they i was going through like 2 different business - auto able and then the actual towing company in orlando. COMPLETE HASSLE!
 19. hello all,
Upon cleaning gunk and dirt off my gas tank i found a dime size hole in one corner of it.
can i patch this? weld a small piece of steel over it? or should i just look for a new gas tank?
thanks,
will e.
 20. hello,
i'm in search of a pair of Bumper Guards front or back (or both) for a 1953 Buick Super 56r. they do not need to be in excellent condition. i'm looking for a pair and/or set that are completely intact (no rust through, no pitting) rusty fine, but no pitting or rust-through
and no or very minimal dents/dings
thanks!
will e.
 21. thanks oldtimer
crin,
they do have a website it's http://www.usradiator.com/
 22. hello all,
i was wondering if anybody knows of a compatible aftermarket radiator that would fit a '53 super?
radiator.com doesn't have anything for pre-60s and i wanted to know if i could get an aftermarket aluminum radiator that is approximately the same size as the original and i could just put it in?
thanks in advance!
will e.
 23. thanks everybody for your replies.
i was hoping that that price was way over, but alas i find myself in the reality of auto restoration. no big deal.
i searched radiator.com but they don't have anything before 1960. neither does acdelco or modine.
could i just get one of the new aluminum radiators with the approximate size of a '53 and slide it in place? by chance does anybody know of an aftermarket radiator make and model that i could use?
i'm not trying to cut corners on my baby, if i had 400 buicks to put in her i would do it in a heart beat, but i just don't have that kind of money right now.
i don't won't to cheapen the car, but i don't plan on selling her. i plan on driving her daily, not win any awards.
thanks in advance,
will e.
 24. i dropped my radiator and fuel tank off at a shop here in charleston, sc to be boiled out last week.
i went by today and the guy said he found some leaks and the radiator needs to be recored. he said it'd be around $400 to recore. and the total for redoing the fuel tank and the recore would be around $550.
is this reasonable? i'm wanting to restore my '53 super to a daily driver. are radiators for this model available and would it be more affordable for me to just buy a new one?
any suggestions, comments greatly appreciated,
thanks!
will e.
