  1. It's been over four months now since I've posted about this car. We were down for three months until we got a replacement axle shaft in the car from Rudy Phillips and got a new exhaust system on it. Two other things were supposed to have been done at a particular local shop relative to body work, but after nothing had been for two months, I went and got the car, which was an "interesting event" I must say. But to the problem. This car just will not move forward or backward under any load, like a ramp or small hill. It will idle ok and rev up ok and on a flat surface will move, but it is underwhleming. Up a hill forget it.

As you "may" recall from previous postings last year, the engine has been totally rebuilt with all new parts including carburetor, fuel pump, distributor components, plugs, wires, gas tank cleaned, filters, brakes, all that stuff. Timing checked. The choke plate is functioning and this is the second rebuilt carburetor on the car and no change in characteristics. The car will start and idle nut even after a 15-20 minute warmup with choke plate fully open, drop it Drive or Reverse, apply the pedal and the car dies. Any ideas? Very frustrating!

  3. OK, you have been a very big help. I searched the forum postings and most everything is indicative of the intake manifold around the EGR valve area. Next to find the paperwork what was done previously and then concentrate on the intake manifold as the source first. May be a little while for resolution, but I'll be back to post the findings. Thanks very much!

  4. That helps. 3.6 engine I think it is with about 130,000 miles. When my wife was on a trip a few years ago, she had some difficulty on the road and it was associated with something like you mention. Some type of repair was done that didn't take too long but I'll have to try and check the papers in the car. If you do find previous discussions relative to this that would be appreciated. Overall this has been a very fine reliable dependable van that has been in the family since new.

  5. Cranked up my '94 Pontiac Transport today and IMMEDIATELY it fast idled probably 1500+ RPM and when I got out I noticed unusual smoke out the single exhaust and the sense of smelling steam. The Van was started cold from only a couple weeks sitting in the garage. Checked the oil level and it is right on full with no evidence of coolant. I did observe a "steam cloud" from the area on the passenger side of the engine seemingly from somewhere behind or under the coolant reservior. I finally shut the engine off and added not more than a pint of coolant although the reservoir was still right at the correct level for cold. Upon restart the fast idle was way down and no steam cloud but I pulled the Van back in the garage until I can get some guidance as to what the problem might be. No evidence of leaks anywhere while sitting or while running. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

  7. I've been stalled trying to get into this because of other things going on and a friend who is really good at this type thing has been unavailable. I have the Service Letters/bulletins printed for reference. Above posted information will help. If/when I can get to it and find out anything, I'll post. The way it's going now, it may be over the winter. Will try to heed to the advice on unlocking the tarnny; I did not try to move the horizontal levers when this happened to me, only the linkages and that did not work. Precarious because I was on a hill and pretty much in the middle of the road at the time.

  9. Found the following website on another forum and inquired about the Packard 8 to auto under product development, but apparently this has been designed for a 50s Packard engine but which one unknown. But the email I received back requested a sketch of the bellhousing bolt pattern and crank bolt pattern for the '41 Packard 120 and am looking for that information.

  10. 1956 Lincoln acquired less than a decade ago and never has experienced "vapor lock" until possibly recently, but not sure it is that. Perhaps effects of the gas now with up to 10% ethanol? Symptons 3 or 4 times now she goes about 11 miles, THEN tries to shut down; I turn on the electric pump for a while, then off and she runs fine no mattrer how much futher I go !!!!The mechanical pump was changed out less than two years ago. The fuel lines have not been altered from their original locaion. The temperatures have only been in the mid 80s. Water temeprature gauge sitting about in the middle where it usually sits. Any thoughts/ideas?

    Thanks

  12. It's coming back to me now. When a previous interim failure of the brakes occurred a couple years ago, it was just impossible for me to remove one or two of those top cover screws even with an offset. There just wasn't physical access.

  13. Thanks Brian. As you know access even to the MC cover is tedious due to steering column, air duct, and wires. With the cover off I can barely see the valve but will try that approach first. I think I see removal of the unit coming down the pike. Thanks for the input. And I have to remember to check Packard info site out.

  14. OK, thanks. I believe I have to get into the plate on the floorboard for access (cannot specifically recall) but I'll pursue that. Hopefully will not have to pull the unit out as the brake lines are always a hassle due to limited space.
