  1. Some other things to check and verify are:<BR>make sure bottom hose is not pinched or collapsing. Is the thermostat fully functional. Since you said it boiled out a little, then we can rule out a faulty sending unit. What about the waterpump condition, i.e., the impellers ok. How "clean" does the coolant remain?

  2. Sounds about what mine runs under the same conditions. It just "depends" on that greater forced convection at cruising speeds. However, with it about 60 degrees out a couple years ago, mine got over past the 3/4 mark and overheated big time in a parade. It can be a combination of things. For example, if the engine coolant passages have not been cleaned out, then crud exists in there and prohibits the proper heat transfer from the the walls to the coolant.

  3. I fully agree, only those little red pentagons ( guess they are 5-sided.....) are indicative of any Packard. Looks like one of them Bearcat? kit cars

  4. You might inquire at Terrill Machine, DeLeon, Tx @ 254-893-2610. They stock 1935-54 I believe. We ordered some valves there for a 1950 and they shipped quick and we were satisfied. Cannot remember the year of your car.

  5. I personally would not worry about that oil consumption.....I don't worry about some of my cars that "use" a quart every 300 miles. I just keep a check on it and fill as necessary. I don't believe I have any older car that will not be down a quart over that much mileage, but then I change the oil in the older cars every 500 miles.

  6. I think I have to go along with the other guys on the good used one that should have any of the bugs worked out and indeed someone else has taken the beating on the depreciation it takes once it leaves the new car dealer. Besides, it seems to be directly proportional, the newer and newer the car the uglier and uglier they become. You just have to check it out good and be sure it hasn't been abused or wasn't traded in because of any particular problems. Or, you can do as a friend of mine with his Toyota.....350,000 miles before he traded.

  7. And then there are the two Dagmars the guy has had for sale at the Nashville swapmeet now about three years in a row. I believe Keith I decided they were not Packard as the guy had labeled, so maybe Cadillac.

  8. The Eustis car show on saturday had plenty of studebakers but no Packards. And on Sunday I took a trip up to Gainesville where out in the woods I saw about 100 Studebakers parts cars along with some pristine examples of the car at one of the big vendors for Studebakers. Security checks at the airports no longer a fun thing.

  9. Idle chat two pages too long to scroll through. Just got back from Florida trip where I saw that same 1956 Patrician behind some stores in downtown Eustis. I looked at the absent "between-the-doors" trim pieces and could see the previous owners had problems like we have seen and heard before. There was glue residue all over the body where the trim pieces were mounted. Packard #2 of the trip was up the road in Umatilla and it is a pink and gray 1955 Panama Clipper sitting under an open building of 4 stalls. I took a digital photo with a borrowed camera but it failed to record the picture. Packard #3 (a 1955-56)I am told is out from there about 10 miles adjacent to an old junk yard but I am told it is very restorable....no time to check it out this trip. And finally packard # 4 I learned today is a 1953 Clipper in Penofoskee that they guy has stopped driving because of age and eyesight. Looks like I needed to stay down there one extra day.
